(if they're at a reasonable age) when they act spoiled and disrespect what they do have

I realized my daughter had too many toys when all she wanted to do was play with anything that wasn't one of her toys! She had so much stuff in her toybox she was just overwhelmed. So I went through and removed about half of them, most of which she was a little old to get much out of anymore anyway, and now she loves her toys again! She's about a year old, and has more stuffed animals than anything else right now! She just loves stuffed dolls and animals, I need to stop buying them for her though or by the time she is even 5 they will be taking over the house lol!!!!

If you are talking about a toddler....they can only focus on a few things at a time.....something soft to cuddle and something to pull ...something to help them use their building skills ..a variety and not too much or you end up picking up toys all day...and it gets out of control. Look for toys in the stores with the ages that they are suited for. Most children love books...and simple puzzles....and something that makes sounds...It's also a good idea to put away toys for a while and then take them out again and the children will enjoy them more.

I think yes my kids have way too many toys coz I keep on buying for them whenever I see anything educational and they have a playroom. But now that my daughter is in pre-school, I imply the reward method. She'll have to get all correct in her spelling quiz before I buy her new toys. And I'll only buy educational toys. Only at times I'll buy her Barbies and other girly stuffs.
I buy toys according to age recommendation. So once they outgrow, I throw away those spoilt ones or give away those in good condition to the more needy children :)

It depends on the age of your child. For the younger ones, the suggestions of removing most of them and then switching them out periodically is a good one.
For an older child, you may want to introduce the concept of giving things away to those who do not have many (if any) toys. Especially when there is a tragedy like Katrina or the recent FL tornadoes--- or a women's shelter, etc.
When I was a kid I got a few toys at Christmas and my birthday--- and I was so excited by them and played with them all year. My own kids were more like yours--- at least a small something almost every time we went to a store. Most of their toys meant very little to them.
I finally started doing as I said--- together we boxed up things for other kids-- and I cut way back on toys-- especially the expendable kinds. We saved birthdays and Christmas for 'experiences' like a trip to a water park etc. or something-- bought more arts and crafts supplies, educational toys etc. and just one or two frivolous things they REALLY wanted.
Worked out much better.

I knew my kids had to many toys when they had 4 rooms full of toys. a toyroom, their bedroom, dining room and lounge room.
I moved from a house into a unit and only really noticed they had to many once I tried to figure how all toys would fit in a unit. So I gave most of them to charity.
And now they have to many again, they didnt clean their toyroom after a week of being asked, so I just took garbage bags and filled them with all the toys that wernt put away. 6 garbage bags later you could see the floor. But the room is still full of toys.
Looks like we'll have to give some to charity again.

You know you have too many toys when your family room looks like Toys R Us!! My kid has WAY too many toys. It seems like every time we go out we come home with something new. I have resorted to packing a bunch of stuff up and putting it in the basement and then periodically I switch it out and it is like brand new again!

rani, the last person left me a really annoying message. Look just because Im a high earner, means in the uk you are entitled to still get a decent amount in for nine months, so you can bond with your child (married or not). Had I been poor, I would not get much as I had not paid in much. This is the UK system and it annoys me that opinionated americans like yourself seem to be so judgemental. May be I will assume your fat, uneducated and drive you car everywhere because your british, and others regardless of their sucess are supposed to take that from a small minded women, like you Rani.
As for the toys, lots of toys are great stimulate the brain and help with developement, trust me you want intelligent children, buy them educational toys and they won't go round affending others are entertainment due to their own lack of self esteem and attention when they were younger, like Rani!

We have limited space. If their toys can't fit into the spaces that we have set aside for toys (their toy box, numerous shelves and drawers) it is time to sort through the toys and eliminate. I also, go through toys before birthdays and Christmas. I get rid of the toys that are broken or are no longer played with.

When the toys take over your house. You can't go into a room without spotting a few toys.

My son has a ton of toys. A week before Christmas and a week before his b-day (He'll be 3 in Aug) I box up toys that he is not really interested in anymore and give some to Goodwill, and save the others in the garage for (Hopefully) the next baby.
