I think we all expect more from our families and when they don't come thru we are hurt. Being kind to 'strangers' is just that - being kind. As far as families go, remember the saying: "You only hurt the ones you love". It's so true!

I think family is easier to insult, make fun of, tease, put down and treat as you say like crap. It is easier to take family for granted because they will always be family no matter how pissed off you get. Strangers on the other hand have not yet given their approval of you and so, people will put on the Ares for them and be nice, and approving to win their favor. Family is like the truth of who you are and they know it; So, the answer is yes, people do treat strangers with more respect then family, at least on an everyday basis.

I don't know about all, but my in my family, my sister is the worst for this. She won't speak to her family members, talk about them behind their backs until she need you to do something for her and her kids. A complete stranger will enter her life and she'll turn coal into a diamond. She have open her home to people she went to school with and would not even let our father enter her house nor call him on the phone. So I have that in my family too. I learn to separate myself from people like that, even if it's my family. I treat people(all) the way I want to be treated and I know I'm no better than the next person. Hold your head up, and learn how to laugh at them.

I think that we as a society have been brainwashed by tv programs that depict a family life of disrespect towards each other in the family....and 'they call it comedy' ! I think until the tv stations start showing shows where respect towards family members is the norm...crap within the family unit will continue to be the norm

I have seen disfunction in mine and others as well, its all about putting on a front for others, trying to project an image that is opposite of what they really are. This is based in insecurity. The best defense is to not repeat it and be your true self.

maybe it's cause we know our families are always there(or supposed to be). And when you need to vent it's your loved ones who are closest. when i do witness someone being nasty to a stranger, I wonder how they treat their own family
