If those books are controversial then people have way too much time on their PC hands. Those books are lovely little children's books and should be left alone rather than being picked apart. The Chronicals I read every year and I do so enjoy them.

Because it contains themes of Jesus (Aslan the Lion..."aslan" translated from arabic is "lord"), and contains themes of the Old Religion mixed together.
Aslan also makes reference to the fact that evil will exist, yet all the evil ones will eventually return to the Light in the end. This torques fundamental Christians who relish the idea of hell and damnation.
C.S. Lewis was a brilliant author. You should read the entire series of books-Lion, Witch & Wardrobe is not the only one...contains all the Christian mythology and pagan symbology. Awesome...

I wouldn't call it controversial. It is a Christian series....and the way that it presents itself is a bit subtle. It's almost designed to set the framework for religion within a young child's mind for later building, without them realizing it is doing that. I loved the books as a child (I understood that I was reading a Christian series at that age)...and recently re-read them for the sake of nostaligia....I still think they are fun fantasy stories. I'd allow my children to read them. I probably would make them aware of the content (assuming they didn't realize on their own).

There is question as to why C.S. Lewis wrote it. Originally C.S. Lewis was an atheist, but as time went on, he became a big believer. The question is whether or not he wrote Chronicles during his atheist period or his believer period.
Well, at least that's the only sane reason why there might be controversy.
Religious fanatics always get their panties in a bunch whenever there is any references to God and Jesus which they don't control. Originally Catholics refused to let people read the bible because the priests wanted to be in control of people's beliefs. It's all about power, control and bullying.

Appearently the story is a big anology between the life of Jesus and the Lion in the story.

Same reason as Harry Potter. god is a jealous god, and doesn't like other fairy-tales competing with his myth.
