We were shopping at Payless, we weren't out long, so we decided to take her new puppy. And the puppy was fidgeting so we took him out to do his "business".After he did, he ran out in the highway. The speed of the cars must have been at least 50-60.Some cars stopped and honked the horn, others barely missed him.She was afraid if she went out to grab him, she would get hit too.We called his name and he was walking back to us.And he was about 10 feet away when a car hit and killed him.The owner of the car gave her 450 dollars to buy a new puppy, but she has been sad for a month. They haven't gotten a new puppy yet and even though my puppy got killed by our neighbors dog, I don't know what to say to console her. What should I do?

That is very sad, I am sorry to hear your friends puppy got ran over. BUT WHAT THE HELL WAS SHE THINKING... letting him down with out a leash or harness, it is very obvious what will happen if you let a small dog down by a major highway or road. Puppys and dogs are like children it is the OWNERS responsibility to keep them safe and to make good decisions. She got lucky the person who ran over her dog was kind enough to pay for it when it wasn't the drivers fault AT ALL. As far as consoling your friend, just be there to listen to her she will be ok. Encourage her to refrain from buying a new puppy until she has gained some responsibility.

I haven't seen a puppy actually get hit by a car, but I saw a near hit that could have been an even bigger accident. My stupid neighbor a little down the road always let his puppy run around the front yard unleashed and one day the puppy saw another dog across the street and decided to run towards it right into oncoming traffic. There was a car coming and it saw the puppy so it swerved and avoided hitting the puppy, but the car was banged up bad as it hit a tree and some of the people inside were hurt as they weren't wearing seat belts. I'm glad that the puppy wasn't killed, but it's terrible that people were hurt in exchange. All of that could have been avoided if the puppy had been on a lead.

Wow that is sooo sad and how nice of that driver to give her money!! There isn't much to say just be her friend I lost my dog from old age last summer I knew when the rite dog came around it would be rite! like a gift from my dog mittens, and wouldn't you know 3 days ago I got a puppy she is perfect and it all came together as it should. She will know when the time is rite tell he when the rite dog comes along her deceased dog will send her some clues that the deceased dog will pick her out a new pup. That makes me feel better that I am not replacing my mittens but accepting a gift from her.

First, the woman who hit the puppy was NOT legally responsible for it's death. The owner is the only one responsible for its death because it should have been on a leash. Not having it on a leash was illegal, thus making her responsible. So it was really nice of the poor lady to give up $450 for the little dog.

Anyway....I think you should console her by telling her not to get another dog until she is ready to be responsible. SHe needs to keep her dogs on a leash-end of story. Otherwise, she will just end up with more dead dogs, which is absolutely tragic. When she is ready for a dog, tell her to adopt form a shelter. There is no better feeling than the feeling you get when you rescue a dog from death row at the shelter

Somethings just take time. Eventually she will see a cute fuzzy puppy that she will fall in love with. I wouldn't suggest getting her another puppy because she needs to be the one to pick it out. Just give her some time and let her cry and listen to her when she talks. That's pretty much what friends are for. And if she does get another puppy please try to help her pick out a leash first thing. Good luck!

You should tell her not to get another dog. And by the sounds of things maybe you shouldn't either. Sorry to be harsh but if neither of you can keep a puppy alive to adulthood even the choice is clear.

OMG.....That was terrible, it's horrible when you loose a pet, well try to console her and hopefully she can get a new puppy to make her happy again, she will never be able to replace the one she lost, but at least it will cheer her up again. Good Luck !!

I say, do the listening thing. That's important. One of the core human needs is to be listened to. At key points in the conversation, mirror(repeat meaning in your words) what she is trying to say. Don't be near red things during the conversation, as red increases metabolism and blood pressure.

Listen to her and let her cry on your shoulder. It's really sad and she needs to mourn. It may take a while for her (and you) to get that awful image out of her head. You're not going to make the hurt go away, but you will make it easier for her.
