Music theory is a study of how the "language" of music fits together. Think of it this way....In english class you learn how verbs, nouns, adverbs and so on fit together to make a grammatically correct sentence. Music theory is pretty much the same thing. You learn how notes and chords fit together to make a piece of music. You spend most of your time analyzing and writing phrases and entire pieces of music. I took music theory in college and it was one of my favorite classes.

The study of written music. It focuses less on the artistic aspect of music and more the "recipe" of music, if you will. Where some people write songs because they just pop into their heads, music theory teaches you how to write a song based on the ingredients: chords, notes, rhythms, etc.
You start off learning how to read music, if you don't already know. Then it gets harder, going more in-depth about how to put the notes together and sound good.

Music theory is the study of the forms, compositions and actual composing of music. It can be intense at time and frustrating, especially depending upon your previous knowledge of music. You learn basic things such as scales, both major and minor, intervals, time signatures, notes and all sorts of other fun stuff. I love being a music major!

you study how music works. Things like chords, chord progressions, scales, notation, etc.....
You will start off with the basics and eventually get into more advanced topics.
Similar to topics like algebra it is imperative that you keep up with your study or you will find yourself lost when the your instructor asks you to notate a inverted chord and your not sure how to make a chord.
Theory is great and if you are serious about music it is essential
