just tell it her it has to go....I take it you've let this go on to the point that now you're frustrated, but they're her parents and it's both of yours garage, so just communicate that it's buggin you, either she'll tell them to come and get it, or maybe there's other reasons that the stuff is there to begin with, how long has it been there? Anyway, just talk to your wife, you two are mature enough to be married, now fess up to the fact that you want your space back

If you both want the items removed from the garage, you both have to participate in the solution. If you are the one who wants the items removed, than you have to be the adult and go to visit them and tell them that you need them to remove their items.
Give them a reasonable amount of time to remove it, and tell them if they cannot remove it by then that you will be giving it to a charity of your choice. A reasonable time should be at least a few weeks, not a few days, you have to be fair. If they are older, and need help in moving it out of the garage, you can hire someone to help them.
If you do not have a good relationship with your in-laws, then your wife needs to help with this, but you really should not be "getting" her to contact them. You and your wife have a partnership, and should not be dumping unpleasant tasks on each other, but should be working together to make things happen.
This is one of those family and/or friend learning situations. Never "loan"money you cannot afford to give away, and never offer free storage space. You have put yourselves in a tough situation. Good luck and have a good night.

I think you should do it if the parents are yours. If the parents are hers then she has to do it. Let them know you will help find them a storage facility and assist them moving it. You get your garage back and the parents feel loved and cared for. Remember those parents have had a garage before and kids and know what it is like to need storage of their own. Be up front, but helpful.

Just tell them honestly that you need to have their stuff out of the garage. Contact firms that you know store goods and find a reasonable priced one for your in-laws.

Why can't you contact them? Nicely - give them a date by which you need the garage emptied & tell them that you will be willing to help them sell or move it. Set a definite date that you will be free to help. Stick to your guns & remind them the week before of the date. If they beg off, tell them that you are sorry, but you need the garage & will be bringing their stuff to them.
Good luck!!! you don't need a reason - it's YOUR garage!

Send them brochures for storage places in their area and simply say..."By the way, we'll be cleaning out our garage in a few weeks. We decided we want to actually park our cars inside so here's some other options for storing your precious things." or maybe "We're cleaning out the garage because we need the space for something else. Could you find another place to store your things?"

organize the garage, buy some new shelves or something and tell her you plan to clean it up next weekend. then maybe she will call them on her own. or tell her you want to paint or something. or you could just plain tell her that you would like them to move the stuff if possible so that you can park cars in there.

Laughs... why does it have to be your wife who does the dirty work? Was it she that allowed them to store things there? Tell them that the Salvation Army is coming to collect the junk you've accumulated in your garage and if they don't want to loose their things to come get them and then CALL THEM FOR PICK UP.

Send them a letter with the date you will leave their stuff on the sidewalk for the garbage man. Then follow through.

Let her know if she doesn't do it by next weekend, you'll save her the trouble and give them a call yourself.
Don't make it sound like an ultimatum, just like you are trying to save her the hassle.
