Because it's essentially an insult on par with burning a bible to claim there is a god to them.
They're touchy because in a list they're the lowest on the social totem pole in the world. Worse then gays, worse then religiously fantastic terrorists, worse then most everybody else, according to the general population. All for what? Not having a theism.
I'll say this too: "Why are the Blacks so darn touchy when the Klan's mentioned."
"Why are the Christian's so darn touchy when people mention they're brain-washers?"
"Why are the Gays so angry when people bring up marriage as between a man and a woman?"
It's the prejudice that angers them, and when they're considered not even worth their humanity, it's no different then basing people on their financial state, their skin color or their nationality.
Think about it, if you're being burned at the stake in the world today, wouldn't you be annoyed at the very least?

Of the hundreds of questions I have answered, a few of my answers probably qualified as "touchy". If a question is posed in a rude way, or has what I think is a very biased premise, I might answer in kind. Most of my answers have been measured and reasonable. Many other atheists have behaved the same way.
Note that I am very concerned that Christians have had too much control over policy in the U.S. for the last decade or more. I get very touchy when it appears that the 1st Amendment might be weakened, or when the teaching of science in public school science classes might be corrupted. If Christians weren't trying to do this in the U.S. I probably wouldn't even be here, let alone giving "touchy" answers to rude questions.

I'm not really an atheist, more agnostic than anything, but this question is really the pot calling the kettle black. I have seen religious people be just as bad as non-religious people. Just look at any question asked by someone who appears to be atheist and you will see loads of replies by rabid christians who claim that they're wrong or that they're going to hell. I would be testy too if people keep telling me I'm a bad person for believing what I choose to believe. On the opposing view,( to all those atheists out there) its really rude to belittle someone just because they choose to believe in something bigger than themselves. If you don't, thats fine, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to as well. This goes for everyone : You want respect for your beliefs, you have to show respect for others.

if i grow to be to generalize as badly as you purely have i ought to change the note athiest for catholic (the unfavorable buggers) yet i attempt to steer away from sweeping generalisms. i'm an athiest via decision, it truly is now to not say i steer away from non secular people or places yet i do unlike hypocracy and unfortunatly faith and hypocracy flow jointly like lies and politics. if regardless of the indisputable fact that, the persons beliefs convey them happiness then tremendous (see you later as they don't harm others) yet even a blind fool ought to confirm the lengthy historic past of brutal conversions, wars, sectarianism, murders and persecution that accompany faith everywhere it is going. faith is used as a device to oppress the susceptible, that is used as an excuse to rob cultures of their land and histories and ultimately that is used as a take care of for some ill (a lot swearing) baby abusers. and wager what? the self same faith purely denys each thing and covers all of it up. at the same time as there is equality accross the international humanity can imagine about dropping time on imagionary thoughts, till then except i see the vatican going austere i imagine faith (catholicism mainly) is evil. in case you hit upon this offensive then so be it, your god will forgive far worse i'm particular. this submit has violated yahoos words and stipulations as there is not any freedom of opinion allowed the following.

We aren't any more touchy than any other group. It just seems that way to you because you don't agree with us.
BTW, I don't care if someone believes in a god or gods. I am just sick and tired of hearing the same tired spiel.
Yes, I am a decent human being with morals/ethics. No, I really don't believe in a deity (becuase you just HAVE to believe to be a good person! *rolls eyes*). No, evolution doesn't have anything to do with atheism. No, we are NOT a cult. Most of us do NOT belong to any organization.
It is the attitudes of the majority that are irritating to us.
Even people like the first Bush president hated Atheists. For what? For not believing in a deity. He went as far as to say we cannot be citizens and patriots. That kind of crap just pisses me off.
The Internet is a good place to blow off steam. I don't know about other Atheists, but, I don't know anyone like myself. It is nice to talk to/read opinions I can understand for a change.

I don't think that atheists in this forum are noticeably touchier than anyone else. But anyone can get irritated at the lack of thought exihibited by some of the questions that appear here. Religious people make claims about religion based on the bible, the Qur'an, or simply on the basis of their own beliefs, without supporting any of this with real evidence of any sort, and it is difficult to conduct a rational discussion with someone who does not use rational thought processes.

Haven't seen that myself. Most religious individuals tend to run in circular logic and rationalizations- they've made their conclusion, now they just have to make sure everything fits. I'm agnostic myself. I allow people to think what they want; it just has been my experience the religious can't reciprocate and start to proselytize. Then I respond and since I don't follow the religion and raise objections the whole dance starts anew... I'm not going to mollify the religious just because it alarms them that I hold a position that rejects their beliefs.

i think i know how they feel. i can see how the concept of God might seem ridiculous to them especially since science can explain so much about life. when i see people seriously believing in superstitious things i am sometimes incredulous that they actually believe that. i do understand their view, but its annoying when some look down on believers. i dont follow my faith blindly and dont reject science. believing in God doesn't make me less rational or less intelligent

Well, a recent rise in argument started from the religious, where they claimed that atheists were spiritually ill because they didn't worship any Gods. I can't really blame the atheists for getting angry at something like that.
