The bird should be banded. If it's not, don't trust the dealer. The band should include info on its age and breeder. Otherwise, the older the bird gets, the scalier and rougher its feet and legs get - which is kind of an imprecise method of guessing the age. If you think you're getting a good deal from this pet store, well, it's your money.

You might be better off trying to find a local or near-local breeder and buying from them. You can talk to them and get a feel for their integrity. You can find ads in local papers or in specialty bird magazines like Bird Talk.

Well hopefully you've owned birds for awhile before thinking of purchasing a parrot especially if it is an African Grey Parrot - they are not for novice owners....
If the parrots eyes are black - then the parrot is still young - if the eyes are yellow, then the parrot is considered an adult...

Dark eyes=youthful bird, under 6 months
Lighter eyes, pupil obvious=over six months to 60 years...

If the bird is tame, sweet, and calm, age should not matter. Greys live a long time...

If it's older with developed eyes, and is not friendly, you should probably pass and look for a younger, more friendly bird. Greys can be tamed, but it takes time and dedication and is not an endeavor for the uninitiated...!

Please, for the sake of the parrot and yourself, do not buy a petshop bird!!

check a rehabilitation/ rescue center in your area. great birds in need of a home, and the people actually know what they are talking about.
you could be some little feathery baby's hero, choose to rescue a bird!
