Heat steel and pound it into shape. More work than it's worth unless you're trying to master the art. Samurai swords are constantly pounded into shape, folded over, and then pounded into shape again. This process can take up to a year for the best swords. It really compresses the steel making it very hard. That is why they are so razor sharp. The harder the steel the better it will hold an edge.

i used a old hand saw blade, drew out the knive shape i wanted and used a grinder to grind the basic shape, then use the same grinder to sharpen the blade. Cut the handle out of a chunk of wood, glued the wood to the metal with epoxy, drilled 2 holes in the wood and metal for rivets. Then shaped the wood handle to the metal blade. Fine sharpened the knife edge, 11 degrees is what works best. And I still use the knife after 15+ years. It does not fold, but I am still proud of my work.
