I'm new to XP and I'm wondering about some of the programs I used with my other Windows edition.

When I had the misfortune to catch spyware on my computer, I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy, It annihilated that spyware! I would highly recommend it. It's a good choice.

I use spybot. But not for the manual scans. I just update and immunize.
If you just want to keep your XP safe.. use a software firewall if u dont have a router... such as zonealarm
Have a good virus protection software.
Download Spyware Blaster, A-squared, AVG Anti-Spyware
That should keep ya completely safe..

I've used it before. The only problem I have had is that after it does the scan, it sometimes is not able to delete some of the "bad" files that it just uncovered.
