While we Americans may waste more than necessary, every town I've lived in has a recycling program. Too generalize that americans don't care about recycling and ecology demonstrates a skewed view of americans.
Furthermore, your "question" does not identify the other two important ways to protect the evironment reducing and reusing (Remember the 3 R's), both much more effective than recycling.
Currently the United States is working on using more renewable resources from talk of setting up wind turbines in Massachusetts Bay, powering engines with ethanol and hydrogen, and creating synthetic oil and gasoline from biowaste.

You're generalizing.
Most Americans DO care about ecology and recycling. In many states it is the law that everyone must recycle.

Capitalism........
Have you been to Walmart, Target, Cosco, Sam Club, etc.. Look at all the pointless crap on the shelves. This is Junk that nobody needs BUT somebody in will buy. If nobody bought the junk sold at stores, there would be a lot less produced.
People WOULD recycle is it would benifit them financially. Recycling , for the most part, costs more money than what it saves.

My wife and I recyle but we heard that up to 85 % of the recycling ends up in the landfill as they just don't have the time to sort the items out. I hope I am wrong as it would be such a waste for everyone concerned.
I know they used to pick up cardboard..like pizza boxes and from carton and boxes but now the garbage men won't pick them up as recyleable but want to just put the cardboad in the regular trash. I seen that for myself. I believe what you are saying about our waste in the U.S. I was in Germany and Japan and they are very serious about recycling. But think about this. The United States is one of three (Burma and ?) who don't use the metric system. What do you deduct about the U.S. and how they view their priorities? well, time will tell

Might not seem to, but a lot of people do...in our town, it's almost required...it's part of our trash bill and when you drive down the street, you barely NOT see the recycling bins not there and they are full so a majority here take advantage of the service....

They have been conditioned to fast life and quick solutions. But the companies of products sold is partly to blame with their double and triple packaging.
As with everything that should be considered in life, it starts with individuals. We all should be conscience of waste.
There are other countries besides the US are not so conscience of waste either. But the US is trying to make some effort... it just a lot of people to recondition.
