I've been having some health problems and my doctor wants me to have a Nerve Conduction Survey done. He said that it's not a very pleasant test and it will be especially difficult because i'm scared of needles. Has anyone had one done and what was it like? I didn't get specifics because we were discussing some other things and it was on a list of tests i'm getting done but i'm worried about it. Any info would be great.

It's not a pleasant test, but it's not all that painful, and the discomfort is more from the nerve stimulation than from the needles themselves.

These are very thin needles and inserting them causes little pain, if any, in itself. When you get a "shot", nearly all the sensation is from what's being injected not from the needle being introduced. Nothing is injected with the tiny electrode needles. When the current is run through the electrodes, there may be rather uncomfortable sensations.

About the only complication, assuming good sterile technique is used to avoid infection, is the very small risk of an electrode hitting a small blood vessel and causing a bruise or some swelling. This is minor and easily treated. The needles are not near major blood vessels.

I've had this test and it's really not so bad. It gives information about your condition not easily found any other way. Please let your doctor know you are very apprehensive about the test and discuss the use of a mild tranquilizer to help get you through it if necessary. Other measure like breathing techniques and the use of music on headphones may also make it easier for you.

No one wants you to suffer unnecessarily, so whenever a procedure really freaks you out, say so. Doctors are lousy mind readers, but usually can make things much easier if they are told you have a problem.

Depending on the nerve study being done I have had several done

On my arm they taped the sensors to my hand and then sent the pulse from elbow down

But I had a deeper one on my arm and they had to use needles they are sooo tiny and fine that you do not feel them

And because the are seeing how the nerves work and they want to know if they are working slower so they can not give any thing to calm down.

What helped me was to think about some place I like to be at the beach or where ever really put your self there think about all the details and do deep breathing

And don't look depending on the nerves that they are testing they might be able to use numbing gel on the skin but if the nerves that they are testing are too close to the surface they may not be able to

do not concern related to the blood attempt section, the extra you concern approximately it the extra you have become frightened over not something. have self assurance me, it does not harm that undesirable, and the extra cooperative you're once you flow to get it carried out the extra sensible it is going to likely be for you. Accutane works ok, yet there's a time the place your epidermis will react surprisingly violently to it (this occurs to maximum individuals, besides). even nevertheless, that's an extremely solid zits medicine and in case you have undesirable zits it would desire to be your ultimate decision. solid success.

I would see of you can have some sedation. It will probably be through an iv (a needle) but bear up, they give you a drug called Versed and it is great. You forget what was done.

If your doctor knows, that you are scared of needles, than he should give you a medication to relax before he does the procedure. Your Doctor sucks

Please never be afraid of such minor things. Fear of any sort will put you to death. No body is immortal, be ready to die, then only you can live a tension free/happy life.
If you would have given your problems i would have suggested proper treatment.
Doctor should have tried to improve your morale in a better way. Now approach him and tell that you are ready for the test.

My uncle had the procedure done for his neuropathy and I don't remember any needles being used. They were concerned, however, with the peripheral nerves. He suffered from diabetes and alcoholism.
