Do you or don't you agree that English as a second language should be a course for children , in elementary school, who were born in the United States?

I, for one, believe that if one is born in the US, English should be the primary language. If the family chooses to only speak their native language, i.e Arabic, Spanish,Swahili, French, etc, we should not waste resources to teach the children "English as a Second Language."

What do you think?

English as a Second language means that the person is from a foreign country and is learning English as their second language. That basically means they learned another language first because they weren't born here. It is a program made especially for people who learn English after learning another language. It isn't set up for people who are already English speakers or who were born here.
If you want someone to learn English how else do you expect them to learn? Do you expect a two year old learning to say Please to automatically jump into the shoes of a 16 year old in his English speaking ability? I think not.

English should be the primary language of all US states. All other languages should be taught as a secondary language for anyone who wants to learn a new language and visit foreign countries.

I don't mind children of legal immigrants being given ESL classes, but what I hear is that children of illegal immigrants are enrolled in our schools and that in many areas they are being taught in Spanish by Spanish speaking teachers - this is wrong. The children of illegal immigrants should NOT be allowed to enroll in our schools - they shouldn't be here, in the first place - and children of legal immigrants should get ESL classes but not Spanish speaking classes. They will learn English much more quickly if they are in English speaking classes. As well, the anchor baby law should be abolished and children whose parents are illegal immigrants should NOT automatically receive US citizenship just by virtue of having been born in the US. They should only have the citizenship of their parents and they should be considered illegal immigrants, as their parents are, and they should all be deported as soon as they are found by the authorities.

I took both exams. Well in English first language(EFL) you don't have to analyse any poems but you do need to write essays. Actually you need to write essays in both exams. I got a B for both. They aren't so hard. Just give it a try. I'm sure you will do alright :). Definitely EFL will carry more importance than the other one. Why don't you take EFL first and if you don't do well go take the 2nd language one.

They have to be taught the official language if they are going to be held accountable to take driver's license tests, file income tax returns, etc. that are printed in English.

I think if you want to be here then learn the language. Try and go to another country and tell them they have to learn English so you can speak to them. So no don't waste time if they don't want to learn English.

ok....you just said it should be a course for kids born in the US...and then you said we shouldn't waste resources on it. i don't get your question.

but uh...if i had to get out my crystal ball and read your mind...i guess i would say...yeah, if you were born in the US and your parents teach you only their language until you get to school...then you should sink or swim. those kids will learn it, guarenteed.

now...if you are 16 and your parents move you to the US, you are going to need some help.

All Americans born here or not should not be ignorant and everyone should be able to communicate in two languages. The world is not an English-only speaking so there is "no waste" when a child learns to speak two or more languages

English only is ignorance only!

Fear, hate, and discrimination are subtle tools of ignorance and arrogance.

It should be a law that all children in America should know the English language.
