Look, just tell your buddy to deal with it. Put it behind him. The military won't want him any more they he wants them. They'll process him out and that will be the end of it.

In a word - NO.
When you don't show up for work, you're listed as having "missed a troop movement." If you haven't shown up for 24 hours, you're then listed as AWOL. If you're still gone after 30 days, your status is upgraded to DESERTER, and it stays that way until you either get caught, turn yourself in, or die. Considering that the military fingerprints everyone who joins, you can pretty much forget any kind of life in the United States. And fleeing the country is gonna be pretty hard since you're now a wanted man.
AWOL is not something that will just go away, and the military absolutely WILL NOT forget about it. Remember the Army sergeant who deserted to North Korea in the '60s and turned himself in last year? They STILL prosecuted him!
Do yourself - or have your "friend" do himself - a favor. Go turn yourself in. Turning yourself in will be noticed by the military judge or by the panel that tries you.

Who's your friend? No don't answer that. Being AWOL can be very serious and have long term concequenses. It depends on a lot of different factors, previous record, medigating factors and such, just like any other crimminal charge. However like the previous posters mentioned, if your "friend" doesn't come clean then any interaction with the Federal or even a state government agency can put him behind bars.

From the looks of your last few questions you must know someone who is AWOL, that someone should know that there has probably already been a warrant issued for their arrest, it's a felony warrant, federal. It will show on any background check, from a job application to a traffic stop. And there is no time limit, their best bet is to turn themselves in.

Dude, if you're AWOL then you're in deep dodo, and your life is going to pretty much suck, because you will get caught eventually. Also, being AWOL will follow you from now on. Being a coward is never a good thing.

Exactly.
As I mentioned to you earlier, the best thing you can do for your friend is to convince him to return to duty, fulfill the obligation that he/she VOLUNTEERED to do (no one put a gun to their head).
Then honorably separate after their term is done.
Also, you knowing about this, if they do become a deserter-after 30 days AWOL- YOU are now an accessory after the fact to a Federal Crime. Some friend.

As long as you do not expect to ever get social security, food stamps, welfare, a drivers license, own a house, get a dog license or anything that you have to interact with any government agency.
