Guys and girls are a lot more alike than not. He's a human being... so treat him as such. Take a sincere interest in him. Depending on your (plural) ages... what classes is he taking, where does he work, what does he like to do for fun, what's his favorite TV show, what's his family like....
Most people's favorite subject is themselves- ask a question about him, then LISTEN (yes, I have a problem with this part..). Let him talk. Ask questions to clarify, to show that you're interested...
Just don't make it the Spanish inquisition, no interrogating, just sincere interest and curiosity.

Bake him some treats , or make him a mix tape , send him a letter or just come right out and say it !!!
