I have been using Suave Shampoo + Conditioner on my Boxer for over a year with no problems. Actually, my Boxer had a reaction to the dog shampoo I was using before - that's why I switched to human shampoo.
Dogs, just like people, can have different reactions to different products. For each dog, it's simply going to be a matter of trial and error to find a shampoo (be it dog or human) that reacts well with your dog's fur and skin. Unless your dog has a sever allergic reaction, I've never heard of human shampoo causing hair loss. I would stay away from anything with perfumes in it.

I have been using Johnson's Baby Shampoo on my dog for over a year and her coat is very healthy. She has never had any skin problems nor has she ever had any problems with her fur falling out. I wouldn't recommend using any type of bar soap, but I would recommend using any type of mild shampoo. And push come to shove, you could always ask the vet because each dog is different:)

Chances are if it is really a mild shampoo, like Pert Plus, etc., it won't make them lose their fur, but it will definitely irritate their skin. Dogs need to retain certain kinds of oil on their fur and skin, and these completely clear it away. And above all, don't EVER use dish soap! It's the most harsh and will bother them! Your dog will be itchy. Your best bet is to get an oatmeal-based shampoo. You can buy them for cheap in the pet section at the grocery store, Walmart, or a pet store. It's super easy to find.

The soap itself is not what would make the hair fall out. The issue would be if you used too much soap and did not rinse it out completely (because just like in humans, the dried soap would cause an itch, we scratch it so much the hair comes out). If you are going to use a human shampoo, be sure you THOROUGHLY rinse it out. Spend two to three times longer rinsing then it took you to wash (so if you spend 5 minutes washing with the soap spend 10 to 15 minutes to rinse). That makes sure you have rinsed all the soap out.
And Dawn dish soap is EXCELLENT on pets.

No, you shouldn't use human soap/shampoo but its because it will give them terrible SKIN conditions (dandruff, itching, etc). Dogs need to keep a certain amount of oil in their fur. That's what makes it so shiny looking and if you use human shampoo or wash them too often it takes the oil out and creates terrible skin conditions.

It won't make them loose their hair but their skin is very sensitive and so are their eye if they get shampoo in them. I have used baby shampoo on our show dog in a pinch because they tend to be very sensitive.

My vet told me ONLY to bathe my dog with baby shampoo, because she was losing her fur...she said that its much gentler than most dog shampoos.

The pH balance is different so it will indeed aggravate the pet's skin. A great alternative is the REGULAR blue Dawn dishwashing soap. Its pH is a match. If your dog requires a very gentle soap to offset any problem skin, then oatmeal dog shampoo is what my vet suggested.
