First of all, do NOT shave your cat...the fur is there for a reason. Secondly, it COULD be caused from dry, hot air since it is winter, but more than likely it is from the food you are giving him. Purina isn't necessarily a BAD food, but in comparision to Iams, Eukanuba, or Science Diet, it is a little down on the list. Because it is slightly cheaper, sometimes they dont' contain all of the same ingredients that are necessary for healthy skin/coats. Or, your cat might have a slight allergy to something in the food. You certainly might try some canned cat food, the capsules that others have mentioned are ok if you can sprinkle the oil on the food and the cat will still eat it(they are so finicky its hard to say) but trying to give your cat a pill every day might not work so well. If after trying all of these suggestions, you might want to speak with your Vet about the cats diet. That is usually the culprit for dry unhealthy skin and fur.

Dandruff can be dry skin - if you house is heated by gas, that makes a pet's skin dry out easier. If you feel comfortable bathing
you can purchase a shampoo "over the counter at a local pet store and bathe the cat something that would be good condtioner
Most people cant bathe a cat and there is a product that you can spray on your cat's fur and it condtions the coat and adds luster to it and you can also bathe the cat with this because you add warm water to the product. called MINK OIL (ck to see if good for cats) Or try a cat food for skin and coat .

Believe it or not I used to give my cat a bath in dandruff shampoo about every two weeks. I also gave her vitamin E capsules and made sure she had wet food every day. Tuna also of course.
Their skin gets dried out just like ours and they need the oil and moisture in their diet. They should have a small can of wet food along with the dry food every day. It helps with digestion and also their coat.
Do not give him only dry food that is very bad for them - Try NUTRO brand food, or IAMS, or SCIENCE DIET - Check the ingredients for "chicken parts" that is feet, beaks and all the left over crud..

It could be dry skin or some other allergy. If he's only getting dry food, you should add some canned food to his diet. The dry food for cats is like eating potato chips for us. They need the wet food for a lot of reasons.
I'd also check with my vet just to make sure he's okay. And in spite of one crazy answer here, never shave the hair off a cat or dog - it regulates their temperatures.
Good luck!

He needs a trip to the vet. Cats are very mysterious and get stressed about things we might not notice and their skin may be the first symptom of something else going on.
We have a female and we feed her a small can of tuna packed in water, once a week, and her coat is beautiful. She just saw our vet this past week and he said, she is a very healthy, happy cat.

Try increasing the oil in his diet--feed him part of a can of tuna in oil every day. If that doesn't work, go to your vet.
