Just what btho said, you describe the Hilo side of the Big Island perfectly. Old Hawaiin family life slow, easy, and beautiful. Many people will say to you "Too much rain there!" Don't listen to it! The rains when they come are intermittent and warm and without them NO FLOWERS! One other thing when you fly into Hilo you are already there. Hotels 10 minutes from the airport. No crowds.

btho said it all, except this it is the Big island, not the "main island." Most folks think of O'ahu as the "main" island as that is where Waikiki and the State Capitol i. However, if you are looking to see the "real" Hawai'i then Hawaii island (the Big Island) is for you. The volcano is here, and the island really lives up to its name... You could take all the other islands in the state and put them on this island and still have room left over!
Also, we have all the climate types that exist in the world here except one, so no matter what kind of weather you are looking for, we have it! lol
As far as hotels, there are nice ones on the Kona side, resorts and such, although they are kind of expensive. When my friends come from the mainland they stay at Uncle Billy's - there is one in Kona and one in Hilo. Not the best or fanciest, but it is clean and reasonably priced, and they offer deals that include room and car.
The only other advice I can offer is to remember that although we are a state, the people and our lifestyle here is much different than the mainland. Like anywhere else tho, as long as you respect the local customs you'll be fine!
Have a great trip!
=)

Maui would be the perfect island for you and your boyfriend. It's not too big, but not so secluded like Kaui or Lanai that there is minimal to do. Stay in the Lahaina/ Kaanapali area as the beaches there are spectacular. Plan on snorkeling near Sheraton Black Rock. The sand is white and coral and views are great.. however it does get a bit crowded later in the day... so go early. Plan on taking a drive and just bring your snorkel gear with you, because there are so many beautiful spots. Lahaina is a small tourist town where you can go out to eat and sit and watch the sunset. Definately go to CheeseBurger in Paradise! The mai tais are excellent! Take the Hana tour with a tour company, because the drive is a nightmare and the tour buses can go full circle. And mostly go to Mt. Haleakula for sunrise. It's cold up there so bring a warm jacket and a blanket from the hotel. It's an unforgettable experience. Don't though, do the bike tour... it's really lame. But do stop for breakfast afterwards at the restaurant on the way back. (Can't remember the name, sorry). The food is excellent. Do go to Mamma's Fish House for dinner one night. It's the best restaurant on the island, but very spendy. But it's worth every penny!!!! The luau's are tourist traps and not that great, but if you want the experience go to the Royal Lahaina one. It's more money, but better than the others. Watch every sunset, take a boat trip to Molokini and go snorkeling. The people who run the Laylanee are really nice and laid back. If you can't take the tours, every beach is a great beach and every sunset is unforgettable. Have fun!!

Hello and you will love Hawaii. I would recommend the main island. My husband and I just went last year for our honeymoon. The main island is the prettiest I think. The Hilo side of the island is very more rural and native. You have the Volcano National Park there as well...It is amazing!! The other side of the island you have Kona..It is more tourist populated but they have a great luau over there. Which I recommend going to one they are a lot of fun. Don't foget to try the poi ( poi is pooh) As far as a hotel , it wasn't a 5star resort but Uncle Billy's Hotel in Hilo was soo nice. It is the only Hawaiin run hotel on the island. Fresh flowers for your hair every morning and right on the water...The koi ponds were a nice touch. Try the banana and macadamia nut pancakes they are delicious!! Good luck on you trip, and have a great time :)

we're leaving for Maui tomorrow. it's pretty expensive, like 1 gallon of milk is $7. I've been told it's the best romance spot, but rather pricey. i would recommend renting a cottage rather than a hotel, it'd be cheaper. i would not recommend the big island, everyone tells me it's getting bad there. stick to one of the smaller ones, like maybe lanai
