Here are most of my symptoms:

I say backwards in my head all written words I see that are not of extensive length (books, long paragraphs, etc.) What I do read backwards are individual sentences, posters around my school, short phrases said by someone, and other short text. I would become nervous and wouldn't be able to think about anything else if I didn't do this.

I must have all the closet doors in my hallway closed.

I have to hit the light switch a certain number of times (Usually to the number of beats within a section of a song stuck in my head or the number 10)

I open and close the toilet lid in my bathroom four times when ever I enter it.

I avoid the number five as much as possible except when it completes a counting of numbers (I wouldn't skip the number five when counting to ten)

When I am reading my breathing coordinates to the syllabyles of the words I am reading.

All of this happens while I have intruding thoughts of getting shot, hit by a car, etc.

This sounds like severe OCD. You need to go see a doctor. OCD can be very treatable with the right medication for you. I have OCD and it is very irritating and tiring sometimes. Especially in front of people that are strangers. You need to go to a specialist though- someone who knows what they are doing- so they can figure out just the right med's for you. Good Luck.

It is very common to have some level of OCD; do not be afraid of the label. It is only when the thoughts or compulsions make daily living impossible that we need to get some help. Medicine rarely helps with this, but therapy and talking with others in similar situations helps a LOT! Billy Bob Thornton has severe OCD and is quite open about it...

Good luck!

Your symptoms are all classic of OCD. It sounds like you have problems with checking and counting - two very common problems for people with OCD. You are acting out the rituals to relieve the anxiety behind the obsessive thoughts of being hurt...

You should try to consult a psychologist and look into cognitive therapy. There are meds out there for OCD but they don't work for everyone and can have some pretty nasty side effects.

"I open and close the toilet lid in my bathroom four times when ever I enter it."

That is definitely OCD right there, but ONLY IF YOU DO IT FAITHFULLY. If you do it once in a while, it doesn't mean you have OCD. OCD is ritualistic.

You obviously can't diagnose it yourself, so I'd suggest seeing a professional. Not only can they diagnose it for you, but they can also give you help, guidance and possibly medication to minimize the symptoms.

A doctor or psychiatrist should be the one giving you the diagnosis not people online, it sure does sound like it but take a doctors word over anyone elses.

None of us on here are qualified to diagnose you from afar.

That said, whether you are OCD or not, it does seem to an objective mind that you are having a serious issue with anxiety. These thoughts are interfering with your ability to deal with your environment, and talking with a professional counselor can help you to manage your compulsive thoughts instead of them managing you.

Good luck!

It sounds a lot like OCD, but you should see a doctor (who will give you a test, I forget what it's called) to confirm the diagnosis and get treatment.
