The colon is the two dots. The semicolon is the dot and the comma.
Semicolons are used to separate two independent clauses, each of which could become a sentence in itself. A semicolon takes the place of a comma and a coordinating conjunction.
John was a big man; Mark was bigger.
John was a big man, but Mark was bigger.
Semicolons can also supply a kind of "super comma" that partitions series, which are themselves composed of subseries, whose elements are internally partitioned by commas.
The league was made up of were Adam, Bill, and Carl for the first team; Dan, Elbert, and Frank for the second team; and Gary, Henry, and Igor for the third team.
A colon is used to introduce information. It can be used as a super comma before an especially significant word or phrase, such as a defining or illustrative appositive.

A colon is two dots as in : A semicolon is a dot and a comma as in ; which make it merely short of being an finished colon. it is partly or semi. Has really no longer something to do with volume of utilization. It has to do with the products that make it up...dots and comma.
