What is the best way to prepare our dog a little Chihuahua for flying to florida with us on vacation, she is almost three, and in good health, and fits perfectly in the carrier. She is so sweet and a pampered pet, we want to do the best we can for her, she has never flown berfore. Yor answers are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If your pet is going to be in the cargo area of the plane....blankets and a doggie coat to keep him warm. Not necessary if you are able to fly him under your seat.

You might want to talk to your vet about tranquilizers....if you pet gets nervous easily.

Have a great time. I always vacation with my furkids, too!

By the way...there is a cool place in Florida that loves pets. I know you already have a place. But check it out. It used to be www.whitegate.com...

You might be able to take her on the plane if the carrier fits underneath the seat in front of you--call the airline to see. As far as preparing her for the flight, take her on some car rides in her carrier, and just carry her (while in the cage) to places that are unfamiliar to see how she does. Soothe her and give her treats or rawhide so that she can not concentrate on being in an unfamiliar area, and then tell her she's a good dog when she doesn't whine or make any noise.

Some vets might tell you to give them a little bit of Benadryl or something, but avoid this if you can because it takes a long time for them to recover from being drugged, especially one so small!

Ive flown my chihuahua from Kansas to California before, Im not too sure where they put him in the plane but he arrived fine.

I would put a small blacket on the bottom of the kennel, so he is more comfortable, dont put any food or water because it might spill and cause uncomfort.

Just make sure he does potty before he goes in, and dont feed him too much a few hours before flying him out.

Thats pretty much all I can tell you. Good luck though.

You can get a sedative from your vet. Also ask the airline about carrying her on with you. If I had a small dog, I would love to carry her around in one of those cute little purses that are so trendy these days. Unfortunately, I have a great dane and a lab - so the purses are a no-go.

I would ask your vet for a mild tranquilizer that you can give your dog right before the flight.

Talk to your vet. Get copies of all of her vaccination records and have then to carry on the plane with you.
