if your tooth is broken and there is nothing left but the root i couldn't imagine that they'd preform a root canal, more than likely they'd crown it or pull it if the tooth is still there. If i were you I'd get a second opinion. As for being diabetic, you should be fine, there is virtually no blood loss of any kind, it just deals with the nerves up in your root, and for your heart murmur this will not affect it any, it's just like getting a cavity filled, it just takes a little longer, as for the pain i never felt a thing during or after wards, but if you have any worries just let your doc/dentist know and they'll take care of it.

As long as theres enough tooth structure left, you can save the tooth by having a root canal done. Usually patients with a history of having a heart murmur just need to take premedication before and after having dental work done. Having high blood pressure and being a diabetic is usually not a concern for dental work.

Whoa! The most important thing that you said here is that you have a heart murmur. You need to go see a cardiologist before you ever go to see a dentist. You see, you have a lot of bacteria in your mouth and even more bacteria in an infected or broken tooth. When the dentist does the work, he will release a lot of bacteria. Your mouth has a lot of capillaries and good blood supply. These capillaries will take in the bacteria into your blood stream. If you have a heart valve problem that is causing your murmur, the bacteria can collect on it. It will cause vegetation to grow on your heart valve. Think of it like finding a piece of moldy bread. You will get very very sick. I have seen a few patients die from a similar situation. They did not know or ignored the fact that they had a heart mumur and got a major dental procedure performed. When you go to see a cardiologist, they may tell you that the heart murmur is okay to live with. You may just need to take an antiobiotic before going to the dentist.

Root Canals are not that big of a deal. I fainted Boxing Day of 05 and had to have 2. They might put a post in to make the tooth strong. But really they give freezing, and that really is the hardest part. It normally give you lots of freezing and that is the part that hurt the most for me. They did my root canal in 2 sittings, one to take it out and one to see that there was no infection with xrays. They might give pills to make sure you don't get an infection. If you need a a crown that is done in 3 sittings and again no pain, no root no pain. But it took about a week for me to stop feeling a root. But it's all good now. I can take out hockey pucks if I wanted lol but it would cost too much with my crowns and such lol.

I've had several root canals done with no problem, even in my last trimester of pregnancy. You may be watched extra carefully because of your medical conditions. Try to make sure your blood sugar is under control and relax as stressing yourself out will surely not help the situation in the slightest. Make sure your dentist is fully qualified to do this procedure as some dentists that do root canals are not as qualified as they should be. endodontists or Dental surgeons are your best bet. One of my root canals was done by an under qualified dentist and now I have to pay almost twice as much to have it taken out and redone because the tooth has abscessed.
After all that relax, and take care of yourself because not getting your tooth taken care of is likely to be far more dangerous then problems your dentist can cause. As a diabetic you must take special care of every part of your body.

The most important situation that you have to deal with is to find the very best in treating your condition.
Not all specialists in the field of treating root canals are good.
Some can really help to screw you up worse off than you are now.
Ask around for who might have gotten good professional care.
It can really make a difference in the end.
Good Luck
