I'm buying a new home & recently found i can choose the colors of the carpet, paint, floors, appliances & everything else i want.
I want a light blue carpet but i'm thinking of a lighter color like teastain it is a pretty color. I like darker colors but i heard they are terriable for resale. I heard i should go with light colors.
1. Does the colors i choose really hurt the resale value of the home?
2. Should i go with custom wooden blinds or the plain white ugly blinds?
All advice will be considered.

1. Yes. The colors you choose will affect resale. But think about this: If you choose light colors, they will get dirty much quicker and stain easily. Stains are even a bigger turn off when someone is looking to buy a home. You should use the color you like. Are you buying this house just to sell it??? If not, make it happy for you, not some possible future owner. And keep in mind that you can always change the carpet for pennies.... No kidding. Just don't get a high grade carpeting. Go for the teastain color.

2. Definitely custom wood blinds. That's a no-brainer! White blinds always have a tendancy to yellow with sunlight and age.

Anything you put into your home that will be sold with the home will affect resale value, so you need to take into account people's tastes as a whole in what permanent items you put in your home. A blue carpet is a poor choice for resale value. Not everyone likes blue, nor might they have blue livingroom pieces. That goes for a carpet with any color. Choosing a neutral would be a much wiser move. Also, choosing a light colored carpet, as in the "teastain" shade you mention, is not a good idea either, because it can get pretty dirty in five years and replacing carpet can be a big expense when doing so can be avoided by good planning from the beginning. It sounds funny, but choosing a "dirt" colored carpet is a good way to go. A berber with several different shades of yarns in tans, browns and greys really hides the dirt, wears well and has great resale value. Also, a wood blind would be a better seller than the traditional plain white blinds. Just keep them simple. Not too dark or heavy feeling. Put your color in your rugs, large pieces and accessories. Painting the walls is also not an issue because, after five years, you are going to need to repaint them anyway for resale, so at that time, you can repaint them a standard white.

with resale in mind, keep it neutral (but not stark white!) and add custom elements that will increase the value of your home. the custom blinds are a great idea. if you like darker colors, use them in your accessories and furniture. also, if you really want a light blue carpet, why not get an area rug and place it over neutral carpet? this is becoming a common trend--and helps to anchor a space. and you can take it with you if and when you move! good luck and have fun!

Go with a neutral flooring and white trim-work and paint the walls whatever color you prefer. Probably in 5 years you might need to repaint the walls anyway and could repaint a neutral color for resale. If not, I believe most buyers could overlook repainting walls but wouldn't necessarily want to put in new flooring. On the blinds, go with a horizontal blind. I typically use white 2" slates. Good luck and enjoy your new home and keep planning on that dream house. Those dream houses keep me in business!

Yes choosing bad colors could hurt the resale. Choose neutral colors and go with custom wooden blinds

darker colors are bad for resale
ditto for blue carpets
you have a couple of choices
do what you want now and later make changes prior to sale
or do what you think will be sellable later
problem is in 5 years you carpet will have to be replaced period
and you house repainted for resale value
blinds do not add value for resale
kitchen and baths done right do

1. yes... neutral colors will always do better. Our strategy has always been to go neutral with carpets/wall color, and use furniture and other decorations to add design interest and color.
Colors are so trendy... and people will feel more strongly about colors and use it as a negative factor when considering a purchase.
2. Blinds are a minimal expense... and I prefer a more substantial look... and would choose wooden.
