More to the point, I think people are not intentionally rude as much as frustraited, annoyed, and though some people like you and others are going to uni or a low pay job...
Some of the people using public transport are plain uncouth, illbred, and without manners.
Mix all together, and nicer people like yourself are stuck in between.
I know a young lady riding bus to college, some older git kept staring at her. She looked back at him, then away, then as he kept staring she finally growled in the most plain English
"If you want to keep them eyes you will start looking some other place than my chest!"'
She reported that he did not look in her direction again.

What is there to like about taking a bus, the very word conjures up visions of horror. It's a big metal box where lots of people from all over who knows where, carrying who knows what kinds of infectious diseases are cramped together in close quarters all breathing the same stagnant air until such time as you reach your destination and have to squeeze out by some guy who's carrying two bags of books and a bass guitar in order to get off the damn thing.

it's disgraceful that people are charged £2 quid just to get on the bus-unless they have an oyster card, which means fares would be cheaper then. its probably an attempt by london transport to get as much money from us as they possibly could, ripping us off as they do, while the services remain just as bad as they were before oyster cards were introduced. hopefully when summer arrives, i will purchase a bike as firstly it's cheaper, as well as environmentally friendly and plus there's less hassle and convenience. i dislike it when i am sitting on the bus and people are blaring out load music from their phones, rather than listen to it using their earphones. why do people do this? things i also hate about using the buses is at the point where they change drivers or when there is also another bus, which is the same bus that you're on and yet you cannot get off the bus through the front door or the back door and just as you are trying to get on that other bus, the same route number bus goes past you, if you understand what i mean! plus, we have to wait ages for the driver to turn up. if i am at the bottom deck of the bus, i refrain from sitting down, as i'd choose to leave those seats for the elderly to sit on

i think its because the buses never run on time,so your standing or seating in the freezing bus shelter.when it does arrive, its nearly full and you have to squeeze to get on. also when you ask the driver a simple question,he/she is very rude. or the driver gets off the bus and walks away.you're stuck there for ages then an other driver takes over.no explanation that their changing drivers no apology for the 2nd driver for being late for the change so the people in the bus are pissed then you get on later. which takes me right back to first comment. my bug bear is that people stand right at the front of the bus when there is no seats. so the driver goes past a bus stop 'cause he says its full but it's not, if the people just moved up the alie .

I try to avoid the buses when it's home-time for the local school. They all have such big bags of books etc. They are always polite when passing up the ailse, they always say sorry after nearly knocking my head off with their bags. I smile with gritted teeth accepting the apology. I think it might be an idea if you got a bike with a sort cart attached at the back to put your stuff in.

It's because there are too many people. This means the busses get overcrowded (so do roads and trains). People become impatient. Their Personal Space is invaded by the cramped conditions on a bus.
All this leads to agression.
Did you know that the UK has the second highest population density in Europe and it is 5x greater than the USA? This is one big reason why we have water shrotages, lack of space (especially in the south) and don't want more immigrants (not racist, we're just FULL).

There's a definite culture to public transportation, and often times an extreme lack of courtesy. The lack of courtesy is not confined to public transportation; one simply needs to look around at people walking, driving, waiting for elevators and any number of daily activities to see a lack of etiquette and unselfishness.
The rude behaviors come from many directions...kids whose parents don't teach them respect of elders or courtesy, adults who have their own set of issues (family, job, etc), the bus driver who may not relish driving all day but what else is he/she going to do. It's unfortunate, but some people just seem to be angry all the time. The possibilites and reasons can be endless.
As patrons, all we can do is not contribute to the problem, protect ourselves and utilize the public transportations reporting avenues. I don't know what the solution(s) is/are, and an occasional, nice bus ride is unfairly rare.

I have never personally had to ride the public bus, or transit as they call it here, but when 2 of my kids were in school, the school contacted with the transit to transport them to school because they were in wheelchairs and the school only transported wheelchair dependent children to the special needs school, and my kids were in the regular school system. My kids complained of having to ride with old people that had mental disorders....people that had body oder...and the kids that were so badly behaved that they were perminently kicked off the school bus. I told them that they needed to learn how to deal with all types of people and made them keep riding.....UNTIL.....the day that I wheeled the kids out to the bus to load them up....the driver (who was in his late 70's) hopped out to bring down the lift...but first ran to the front of the bus to place a wood block behind the front tire......I asked why he did that...he replied that his brakes are not working correctly and he doesn't want the bus to roll away when he is not in his seat....I asked....why are you driving it...it needs to be repaired?!? He told me that he has complained about it for the last 3 weeks and the company gave him the block to resolve the problem.....well..needless to say I did not allow my kids on the transit anymore...I drove them to and from school for the next 8 years. I also called the transit director and told him that IF there is ever an accident involving the possibilty if failing brakes with one of his buses I will be testifing on behalf of the injured. It is amazing to me that these transportation systems are supported by federal, state and city grants (tapayers) and allow these conditions.
