I am the only one using a thermometer, do I need to clean it with rubbing alcohol?

I think we've all been advised to use rubbing alcohol to clean a thermometer. I am wondering. If I am the only one using the thermometer, do I need to clean it with alcohol as often?

Yes. Some viruses and bacteria can live for a long time. If you have a virus when you use it and don't sterilize it after, the virus will still be there.
Think about it... Would you use the same glass over and over without washing it?

Rubbing alcohol is fine in small amounts, but in general it is not that good for your body. It will sting terribly too. The best thing to do with a cut (got this directly from a nurse) is to wash it out with soap and water and then cover it with a bandage.

yes you should clean it even you are the only one that is using the thermometer. It is better to use a sterile equipment each and every time of use, especially when it is your health that is concern. It is part of your hygiene.

Good question, and I've often wondered that myself. I have always, faithfully, cleaned it with alcohol, each time, just like my mommy taught me. I'm not sure why, but I still do that.

if you have a viral infection when you have a temperature, you could possibly re infect yourself if you do not clean the thermometer each time you use it
