I was one the one, in the other question, who said "if the most literal sense makes sense, seek no other sense". You lifted my response out of context, which is of course which most people do. The question was, should all the bible be taken literally. It wasn't, how do you interpret the bible.

I'm glad I happened on your question so I could help you be a little more clear in your understanding!

the best way is to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you and as you study and read the Bible it will be done in this fashion. I know what you mean though i have studied it and got the literal sense and then been told by others that was not the meaning of it at all and so then comes the reading of each word to either prove or disprove

The best way is to understand the customs and practices of the people talking, and then to listen to the word with your heart trying to hear the meaning and not just the letter of the word. Much was lost in translation. there is a really good book on customs and manners of Biblical times.

I think the rule of first interpretation is very helpful when trying to understand each passage. Then, it can be very uplifting to simply read prayerfully for what the words say to you in your unique circumstance. Judge your responses by this question, "Is this love?" and apply the ideas very prayerfully to yourself. Never try to find scriptures to "fix" another person...we really should just be trying to find our own way and let God take care of others. We are called to love and to be light in darkness.

Frankly, we don't know what the author meant to convey and the Bible in their original languages are radically different than the version we have now.

To study from an objective or literary stance rather than prejudiced god fearing blind faith point of view. and as some can see beyond the latter a minimalist rather than maximist view allows for discernment of worth of spiritual metaphor and other devices of literature that were common to the sundry different authors on their debut in inspirational writing. Lets not kill reason and logic in study for a childlike approach in blind faith fantasy without giving ones adult intellect a fair chance.
