I watched "the protector". Is the job real, being that the guard jumps out of a helicopter, pulls people out of the ocean so they do not die?

Does someone know for sure. aka, is part of that job?
thanks

yes it really exist. yes there are actually people in this world that risk there lives to save the lives of people they do not know. I know people in the coast guard and i have even assisted them while i was in the navy. the coast guard do really exist.

The United States Coast Guard is a military, multimission, maritime service within the Department of Homeland Security and one of the nation's five armed services. Its core roles are to protect the public, the environment, and U.S. economic and security interests in any maritime region in which those interests may be at risk, including international waters and America's coasts, ports, and inland waterways.

The Coast Guard provides unique benefits to the nation because of its distinctive blend of military, humanitarian, and civilian law-enforcement capabilities. To serve the public, the Coast Guard has five fundamental roles:

Maritime Safety: Eliminate deaths, injuries, and property damage associated with maritime transportation, fishing, and recreational boating. The Coast Guard's motto is Semper Paratus—(Always Ready), and the service is always ready to respond to calls for help at sea.

Maritime Security: Protect America's maritime borders from all intrusions by: (a) halting the flow of illegal drugs, aliens, and contraband into the United States through maritime routes; (b) preventing illegal fishing; and (c) suppressing violations of federal law in the maritime arena.

Maritime Mobility: Facilitate maritime commerce and eliminate interruptions and impediments to the efficient and economical movement of goods and people, while maximizing recreational access to and enjoyment of the water.

National Defense: Defend the nation as one of the five U.S. armed services. Enhance regional stability in support of the National Security Strategy, utilizing the Coast Guard’s unique and relevant maritime capabilities.

Protection of Natural Resources: Eliminate environmental damage and the degradation of natural resources associated with maritime transportation, fishing, and recreational boating.

The Coast Guard is used I think a lot for rescue type operations such as, lets say a boat is in trouble, you would send the Coast Guard because they would get there quicker than the Navy, it's there job, the whole reason for the branch. Also helps in natural disasters: earthquakes, floods, etc.

Yes it is. You actually saw it on TV in New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina struck with NAVY SEALs in Coast Guard Choppers helping out all the Coast Guard there. The first group to respond was Coast Guard and NAVY SEALs. Not, National Guard.

And, Coast Guard, past tense, was part of Department of Transportation now part of Homeland Stupidity.

Yes that is a real job. No I'm, not part of it but I knwo for a fact that it does happen. The reason you don't see them is because they are way out at sea and you can't really see them or they are going into danger while everyone is coming out. But yes it really does happen. I believe they are part of the Navy or Coast Guards.

Yes, the fresh water sailors really exist. They get to wade home every night from their six month deployments! Just kidding. Yes, that particular job really exists. Serious business. SAR (Search And Rescue). Start by being a Health Specialist (in the Navy, they're Hospital Corpsmen) and then train for SAR. I was never SAR, but pulled a few SAR duties.

Yes, rescue swimmers, "pararescuemen" in the USAF, do exist, and they do routinely perform rescues not unlike what the movie portrays. The movie's technical aspects are well done, though the Coastie's school is not at Barksdale AFB.
