We have a Compaq presario 4240E3 and we upgraded the pentium 2 processor to a pentium 3 and upgraded the memory from 48megabytes to 128 and we put in the windows 98 and windows XP upgrade dics but each time it starts to upgrade but an error message pops up saying "Your computer already has an Operating system installed, which cannot be upgraded by this version of setup. You need to obtain the windows 98 (or XP) upgrade."

Sounds like you need to do a clean install...

1. Backup all your important information - pictures, documents, etc... and programs
2. Create a WIndows 98 boot disk - do a google search if you need help
3. Use the boot disk to boot the computer and format the drive
4. Run XP install from command line

Do a google search on "Windows XP" "clean install" and you should find the required directions...

Good luck!

I agree. A fresh install is needed. Make sure to back up ALL important data. Reformatting will erase all of the data on the drive. Put in the install disk and delete the old partition. Then create a new partition and install windows on it. It should work fine afterwards

I think you need the full version of XP not an upgrade to update your computer, but for better advise go to: msnews.microsoft.com and ask your question there.

What you need to do is reformat the hard drive, then install the OS, this will bypass the Message "already has a OS"... Research this and it will work for you. Good Luck

you don't have an upgrade...you have an original install disk. Back up your files and let it format your drive and install itself OR get an "upgrade" copy.
