No its not wrong to leave him there until he falls asleep. He doesnt need you to hold his hand.....so to speak. You will /are creating a good sleeping habit for him and already sound like youre on the right track.
NOthing wrong with peaking in on him etc, but 07:30-08:00 is a good time, I wouldnt do later than that.

Mine is 15 months and he goes to bed at 7:30 if he did not have an afternoon nap, and 8:30 if he did. Either way he sleeps through the night and wakes up around 7.

no you are doing the right thing by leaving the baby alone intil he falls a sleep on his own.

My son is 20mos now, but he has always gone to bed between 7-730 at night. But that's pretty much his choice, he does NOT like to miss sleep, lol.
As for being too early or late, it is more of a personal preference.
But at that age, he should still be getting 12-13 hrs of sleep.
So if he's going to bed at 8 he should sleep until about 8am.
Etc...If he isn't getting enough sleep you may need to adjust a bit, but some kids just aren't sleepers.
It's your personal preference, its not like you're partying until 1am, lol.

When my son was that age, he usually went to sleep anywhere between 8 & 9, and he woke up at around 7:30 or 8 everyday.
And I don't think it is wrong to leave him until he goes to sleep.

I find that at about 8:30- 9:00 pm is a good time to put the little ones to bed!!! If you wait a little longer at night, then you'll get to sleep in a little more in the morning! It's up to you!!! How late do you want to stay up, or how late do you want to sleep in till!???

I wish when my child was that age and I needed a new schedule that I had not asked that question.
I was told that young children should go to bed at 7:30 even if they are not tired. after following their advice he never could fall asleep till 10 or later, and their was no fixing the damage.

Depends on what time he gets up in the morning. About 10-11 hours of sleep a night is good.
