I have a stock alternator in my 69 dodge charger.it doesn't have a computer for fuel injection, electric fuel pump, etc. so it doesnt draw all that much, all it uses power for is the lights, ignition and headunit pretty much(no A/C or heat).. i am trying to put in an Alpine MRD-M1005 amp to power an Alpine SWX-1242D sub and was wondering if i need to upgrade my alternator or if I can keep the origianl one since i am planning to put in a kinetix HC600 battery and mabe a cap?

According to the equation that amp will draw bout 110 amps. But Alpine amps have a 88% efficiency which means less current draw.

I'd upgrade to a minimum of a 140 -180 amp. alternator particularly if you ever plan on adding a monster amp. at a later date. This is the only way to make a battery live. Go to an auto parts store and ask what an exchange would cost. Find identifying coding and pick one up at a automotive rest home or slumber yard.

If you're going to add more load to the cars' electrical system, it would be wise to upgrade the alternator also, to have extra capacity if needed/make the alternator last longer. If you use 40 out of 50 amps available, the alternator's going to be working pretty hard. If you have 80 amps on tap, 40 would only be half of the load. Look at your components, see how much it all works out to with the headlights/wipers/ heater/stereo going etc.

It should be a crime to muck up a rapidly appreciating muscle car with the foreign object you describe.Whatever happened to the days when kids would spend their cash on headers and cams? You make the music with your right foot, my friend.

If you must do this, you should go for an 100-120 amp alternator. But remember that you also have to upgrade the B+ alternator harness, which won't be heavy enough to take this load.
