They might. They are finding most of the bombs. With the thousands of vehicals in Iraq moving around daily, a couple of IED bombs, that actually do damage, a week is very light. Also many of the bombs that do go off are not small. The are like 500 lbs, 1000 lbs or even 2,000 lbs bombs. Even if a vehical sets a bomb off 50' away, the bomb could still destroy the vehical.

A good question with a complex answer.

As I understand it the JIN or Joint IED(improvised explosive device) Neutralizer is mounted on an armor plated "golf-cart like vehicle"-operated via remote-control and employs a strong pulse of electrical energy to destroy the IEDs.

Lack of deployment in my opinion is due to the typical military (eg Pentagon)inertia combined a general feeling by a lot of people that Wash DC does not share the same sense of urgency as the troops do.

I believe that the army doesn't like the armor plated golf cart type vehicle platform and wants it changed or the JIN system mounted on existing Army vehicles that have all the logistics in place for spare parts, maintenance and also a comfortqability factor for the soldiers who have to use it. It's a classic a case study in the Pentagon's inability to bypass cumbersome peacetime procedures to meet the urgent demands of troops in the field.

But it has passed most of the tests at Yuma with high grades and it just seems to be a slow process and politic that have prevented the Army from ramping up production and deploying them.

However that has not stopped the marines who are deploying the JIN's who are bypassing the testing schedule and sent JIN units to Al Anbar province in western Iraq- where the cities of Fallouja and Ramadi are. The Marines are using several JIN prototypes in Al Anbar.

From the "man" himself "The decision has been made that it's not yet mature enough," said Army Brig. Gen. Dan Allyn, deputy director of the task force, which was recently renamed the Joint IED Defeat Organization. Iraq is "not the place to be testing unproven technology."

Tell that to the Marines- Sempre Fi!
