No. People do it all the time. Just don't put trashy stuff on the piano and you'll be fine. Here are a few suggestions to follow:

If you are putting pictures, it's a good idea to use the same exact type of frame for all the pictures. This way, the eye will be attracted to the photos as opposed to the frames. It will also make the look cleaner.

If you are putting collectibles, make certain that they are collectibles all from the same family. If you are putting up Royal Dalton figurines for example, make them all figurines.

Don't overcrowd the top of the piano. If you do, it'll just look cluttered and take away any value from both the piano and the decorative objects you put on top.

Keep the things you are putting up in theme with the room. If your room is very zen, put a collection of Buddha's, lucky bamboo plants, etc. If your room is more antiquey, place your favorite porcelain tea cups, antique clocks, etc.

It's not too good of an idea to put plants on top of your piano. If you do decide to do this, make certain to take the plants of before watering them and don't put them back up until the next day.

If your piano is in the sunlight, keep in mind that placing items on top will make certain areas darker (under the items...). You may want to place a table runner across the complete top of the piano so as to avoid having a color change on the top of the piano.

Make certain you dust the items regularly so as not to get a dingy, cluttered look.

Enjoy yourself.... it is your home after all!

No it doesn not look trashy as long as you keep it simple and uniform..meaning create harmony with the pieces you use. if you want a focal point use one larger piece or photograph than the rest.
Try to build around that. If your going for more a grouped look of several photographs then try to keep some thing similar about them..say all different frames, but all black and white photographs.
Tuck your collectibles in and around your photographs.....One thing to note..if you stand about 6 ft or so back and your eyes roves to look at everything then you've done well...If you eyes goes to one piece and nothing else..you need to move things around to make everything noticeable..and not have one "sore thumb sticking out".
Also be careful of clutter to much makes everything less noticeable. A few well chosen pieces will look nice, and be shown off rather than hid amongst many.

I think one, large, nice piece looks better than lots of little stuff. If you really want to display a collection, use odd numbers of items, like 3, 5, or 7 in a grouping.

cjkip,
I think it looks homey to put a few photos of family and friends. Don't put any on the sides though, just the very top.

Hey, if it's your piano, and your photos, even if someone thinks it looks "trashy," it's still YOUR call.

Enjoy!

I think you should choose what you like. I like pictures and collectibles, but some people don't. Personalize your environment with what you like to see. As long as you can get to the keys, I think its fine.

i don't think so, as long as it's not really cluttered. i think a couple photos, some books, maybe a plant or a candle and you've got a really nice focal point!
