I got both of mine horizontally pierced a few months ago with a barbell since that allows for better healing.
My piercer tweaked my nipple and kept marking them to make sure the holes would be straight and not look crooked later.
The first one hurt as bad as one of my lobes (which was just a pinch and nothing more). The second one for me was a little more painful and about as bad as my cartilage.
For the first month my nipples seemed to be always erect and very sensitive. I highly recommend wearing a bra to bed if you don't now. They snagged on my lufu but really nothing else.
I didn't give hugs for awhile.
I hated windy days when I first got pierced. I would try to put as much between me and my babies as I could!
I think I gained a little sensitivity since getting them pierced.
My nipples cost about 30$ with a 10$ tip. Just to let you know.

So far everyone has given really good advice, but I figured I'd just reiterate what they've said and share my own experiences too.
I got mine done over a year ago, horizontal and with barbells (they use straight ones). My piercer actually suggested getting the barbells because they are less likely to get caught on things. Also, most places will use longer bars when they pierce you to allow for swelling, and then after they've healed they'll have you come back to downsize them.
The only reason that the piercing would make you "permanently perky" is if you were fitted with a bar that was too short, or if you develop an allergy to the metal. So make sure to only wear high quality jewelry! Also, even though you might not necessarily be "perky", they still might be more noticeable!
I've never had them hurt more in cold weather, so unless I'm special for some reason, then no!
Getting them done wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be! I've heard some people say that when they got them done, the piercer first used numbing stuff on them, but I didn't get that luxury, and the pain was still bearable. It was pretty much just a long, hard pinch. My advice to you is to find a place that does it without clamps, I've heard that's the most painful part of it, and it's avoidable! Also, for a week (ok. . . probably longer) or so after I got them done I pretty wore sports bras all the time, even to bed, they were much more comfortable that a regular bra and kept the piercing from being knocked around and getting caught on things.
I've only caught them on my clothes once or twice, and it's pretty painful, but if you're careful you should be ok!
They are supposed to take 6-8 weeks to heal and could be sore for that whole time. Every once in awhile, inexplicably, mine act up and are kind of sore. Also, I know of people who have taken far longer than that to heal and were still having discharge and soreness after 2 and a half years. You just have to take good care of them and be aware that they're there!
Mine have definitely increased sensitivity, but I've heard it's different for everyone!
I hope I answered all your questions, and if you have any more, feel free to ask!

Hi, I've had my nipples pierced now twice and both times I have had them pierced at 12G with straight barbell.. They have not been permantly erect they do soften. The piercing itself does not hurt that bad (my navel hurt more). I livei in Minnesota and they don't really hurt during the winter, just a little but not to much, they are really noticable in the winter more than summer. It has snagged on my clothes a few times one time even ripping and hence the reason I took them out let them heal so that later i could get them repierced. When I came home the first time after getting them pierced so roughly a hour later they hurt big time that I ended up sitting on the couch still took some ibprofen to make it stop hurting and the second time I was prepared and had took ibprofen right away so that they wouldn't hurt. The soreness lastest about a week and after that it wasn't that noticeable but when taking a shower do not let the water hit the barbells otherwise you will be in a little bit of pain. My nipples weren't sensative before I got them pierced and now that they are they are sensative... I think it all depends on your nipples...Lets just say that after i took them out the first time I missed them so much that after they fully healed (without the barbell) I got them repierced... I hope you like them as much as I do and to tell you the truth no one knows that I have them pierced unless I tell them, Then again that's what padded bra's are for! I good site for looking up experiences are http://bmezine.com that's where I went before getting mine pierced...

1. Generally for horizontal piercings the will pierce with a straight bar because it is easier to maniuplate with getting a ring in after the healing process but you can ask for either or. I personally found a bar was easier but had two piercings with rings (got them pierced 4 times).
2. You will generally find they are 'perkier' because the metal obviously brings them out more but they will not be effected by the cold.
3. All pain is relative personally for me it did alot and i have a very high pain threshold it was my 2nd most painful one. In regard to your question about cartilidge piercings i have too many to count but i didnt find them at all painful!
4. They will hurt if they get pulled on clothes but i would advise a slightly padded bra for some cushion and also if possible wear one in bed for the first few days to generally keep out infection (i know they can get infectd at any point) but it also acts as a bit of protection.
5. I found they were sore for about a day although this varies, obviously on the times i forgot it was there and knocked it it did hurt. As it takes about 6-12 months to heal it will be painful for a while with knocking it.
6. Most people state it will make them more sensitive, certainly has with me however it can of course go the other way there is no real way of telling until it is done.
If you do get it done i would advise getting them done separatly because theycan be annoying and painful when lying down to sleep ei if you sleep on your side.
Good luck with it all anyways and let me know how it all goes!

It may close up in that time. It likely won't heal over, but the hole will probably shrink. On the other hand, you may be fine. It's different for everyone. You have a couple of options. You can get a taper, to stretch the hole open again when you're able to put the rings back in. I've never had a reduction, but when I was in college my roommate did. She was in a lot of pain for a few weeks afterwards. I don't think you will want to go to the trouble of tapering your nipples two days after the surgery. It's up to you, but I can't see myself wanting to do it. The other option is to try to put them in when you can. If it won't go in easily don't force it. If it doesn't work, you can wait untill your surgical wounds are healed and get them pierced again. They're not great options, but I think they're about the only ones you have. Knowing the nature of the surgery, (I've been thinking about a reduction for years, and have done a lot of research on them), I doubt your surgeon would allow you to wear a retainer during the procedure. Good Luck!
