It's normal, but you're cutting off her supply of air. You have to be careful when it comes to things like that. My dog gets easily excited when we're walking and he spots another dog. If I jerk, sometimes he starts having an asthma attack type thing, where he coughs and begins breathing deeply. It doesn't have any long term bad effects on the dog, but you might want to consider a harness, especially if your doggy is a smaller breed.

Often a harness does not help with control, often it can have the reverse effect. If you use a short lead you will have greater control and get something like a "Gentle Lead" head collar which will also help. This will not choke your dog. A short lead on it's own together with a walking stick stops the dog from pulling. The bottom of the stick is placed under the dogs chin when it pulls and this stops the dog pulling. Unfortunately you may feel a bit daft carrying a walking stick.

Many smaller dogs have sensitive trachea's and many dogs will cough when a leash is tugged on around their neck, causing the trachea pain and therefore coughing. Hook your leash up to a harness instead of the collar, so the leash will pull on the harness instead. If you don't want to use a harness, buy a gentle leader.

Try a Halti...they are amazing. They allow you to better control your dog without choking them and damaging their esophagus, which I see a lot of people doing. Any pet store will be able to help you if you are unsure what a Halti is. Most dogs need a lot of time to fully adjust to a Halti, but they are well worth it. Yanking and pulling profusely on a dog leash will not teach him anything, it will only hurt him. Also, try watching "the Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan has a lot of great things to teach dog owners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop it! You are choking your dog. Some dogs are more susceptible to choking than others. They make leashes that fit around the dog's head and chest without choking, and they are cheap at Petco and Petsmart.
You might try reading some books on dog training there are a lot of them at the library.

You are not even supposed to pull hard on their leash because it will choke them. If you don't want them to go where they are not supposed to, get the retractable leashes so you can control the length of the leash and only lead it to the place where you want it to go rather than making them cough.

Try an "Easy Walk" Harness. It causes them to self-restrain when they try to pull, but without involving their neck. Choke chains or even collars around a neck and pulling on it can hurt the dogs neck.

There is too much pressure on her wind pipe. Get a harness. They are better for the dog and it will be easier for you as well.

you could try a Halti...its a harness that goes around the mouth of the dog and behind the ears, it doesnt keep them from opening their mouths however it makes it easier to direct them and it doesnt go around the neck therefore it doesnt choke or hurt them, i used it myself for my rott, its amazing...u can find it at a local petstore and if i remember they are less then 10 dollars... go for it :)

YES that's normal and it won't hurt her. But you should probably look into some obedience classes so that she learns that you are walking her (not her walking you!) and she'll learn to stop pulling.
