is there a household product that i may have around the house that might help me remove linoleum

I've done it myself. Get started with an edge.
If It was glued down with contact cement, Lacquer Thinner should dissolve the contact cement but it will also other things too; be careful. Brush a bit on the trailing edge as you peel it up. using the scraper. and a bit of muscle.

tricky question.... a lot of older vinyl may have asbestos in it. Best thing to do is either cut loose edges out and skim coat floor with type of leveler floor patch or install quarter inch plywood over entire floor and go from their

if you have old black tar like stuff holding them down, get mineral spirits & mop & several heads
