Xanax is the commercial name for a drug called "alprazolam". It is a medication from a class of chemical compounds known as "benzodiazapines". This type of drug is a sedative. It makes people who are very nervous and anxious calm down. For people who are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, this type of medication can be very helpful. Xanax has a half life of about 12 hours (in 12 hours about half of the medication has left the body). This is comparitively long acting. Other benzodiazapines such as Ativan or Valium wear off more quickly.
For people who do not have anxiety (and even for those who do) benzodiazapines cause drowsiness. Benzodiazapines, in general are highly addictive. The body and central nervous system can become dependent on them, and rapid withdrawl in strongly habituated patients can lead to siezures and death. Withdrawl from benzos is therefore a much more serious proposition than withdrawl from narcotics such as heroin or morphine.
Should you take it? Not unless you are given it by a physician who has a long talk with you about the reason that you are being given this medication and how to use it appropriately.
I hope that helps.

Xanax is an anti anxiety medication. I am not a doctor but if you can avoid taking medication I would do so.
The flip side is it may be helpful. The problem with any drug of this sort is that it can work like a charm or you can have serious side effects. You won't know until you take it. If you do take it make sure that there is someone who knows you are taking it that can take you to a doctor in case side effects occur.
The reason I say this is that I had a reaction to a drug that basically caused me to have so very serious side effects. One thing that happened is that I thought nothing was wrong.
Xanax is a benzodiazapene in the same family as another drug called Ativan. Ativan can be addictive. Not sure if Xanax can.
So bottom line consult more than one physician before taking it.

Xanax is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression.
It can also be used to help people who have trouble sleeping at night.
I take it & it makes you feel very relaxed & calm. Once you start using it regularly though your body will build up a tolerance & the effects won't be as strong.
afaik Xanax is one of the strongest forms of depressant around, aside from Stilnox.

it is similar to a valium except valium muscle relaxers and xanax are nerve relaxers. The early use of xanax were used by the nazis and were used as a truth serum. If you dont need them they make you very relaxed but if you take too many you could end up getting in trouble. You might end up doing something you wouldn' t normally do. They make you uninhibited.

Xanax is for anxiety and panic attacks. I take it from time to time and yes the doctor writes it out to me and all it does it calm you if your nervous.
I only take it when i feel nervousness/panicness coming on so i don't know how it makes you feel just to take it to be taking it.

xanax is a hynotic benzo drug. it is a tranquilizer or sedative that will make you calm. do not take it, find other way to make you calm. only stupid people who trust the doctor take it. no, don,t take it. this drug is more addited than street drug. hypnotic drug is dangerous, it will affect the central nervous system, change your behavior to agitated, violent and lead to suicide for long term used. elvis presley, marlyn monroe, johnny cash, judy garland, jon balushi, they all died of benzo drug. doctors used benzo drugs for euthanasia (mercy killing).
