Twichy,

Don't be concerned about that. Since DTV is initiating this, your credit score is not going to be affected.

One of two things could be going on: someone is using your personal information to try to obtain credit, or DirecTV is running your credit to make you some kind of offer (that's called prescreening).

In addition to disputing the information, I'd think the best way to handle this is put a fraud alert on your credit report. If you do it through one bureau, they'll contact the other two. Get ready to get bombarded with copies of your credit report from all three bureaus, along with more information on extending the fraud alert and opting out of pre-screened offers for credit. I would definitely opt out of pre-screened offers.

Next, call DirecTV's billing department, ask for a manager, then ask him/her if they have a fraud department within the billing department. Make sure you get the name and address of the person you speak with, and follow up that phone conversation with a letter. Send the letter certified/return receipt to prove they got the letter, because that letter is proof of your conversation if you ever need to pursue legal action against them.

I know this is nerve-wrecking, but keep in mind that if you did not apply for credit, those inquiries do not affect your credit nor your score. Only inquiries that you initiate affect your credit & score. For instance, if you apply for a car loan at a Honda dealership and they have to shop around for you, that's bad news because not only will Honda Credit appear, but so will all the other companies they tried to get for you.

I've been a victim of identity fraud so I'm always thinking the worst. You may want to call DirecTV first, then put the fraud alert on your file. It's up to you!

With proper ID, Direct TV should provide you the information of who is requesting service, and you may need to notify the police if you suspect identify fraud. Also, contact the credit reporting agencies to verify who has been requesting your information. It's easier to take all possible steps to avoid identity theft rathat than fixing it once you have been a victim!

Simple. Dispute these inquiries with the credit bureaus for removal. If you have not provided WRITTEN authorization to DirectTV or anyone else, then NO ONE has the authority to check your credit.
