Pick a nuetral color. When I shared a bathroom as a kid I was the fav and demanded it be painted purple, no boy should have a purple bathroom. I say a sea blue or green is nice and you could do an ocean them.

Paint it a sea foam green and go with mermaids and nautical things like a fish net hung from the ceiling with sea floats and sea shells in it . You can find real nice wall boarders with tropical fish and shells...Good Luck

black and white with a splash of red here and there.
Retro decor doesn't necessarily mean you have to use oldies icons, but some retro decor works really well for both genders.
You could even go with some oldies boardgames for decor, like frame a monopoly board, etc.....

Do lime green with retro shower curtain like the brady bunch
If lime green will not go, choose any cartoon type colors(red, coral, sunny yellow, grey, aqua) with white trim.

Try a shade of blue. I was in the same boat a few years ago and we went with a light blue theme.

I think that you should paint it like a navy blue or maybe a dark emerald green somelike a natural color like that.
