Is it a dark brown kind of like wet coffee grounds? If so it is more than likely ear mites; especially if it is a stray cat; cats tend to carry and be susceptible to ear mites.

to start you can use some warm mineral or babyoil lightly on a cotton ball to clean out his/her ears. Kitty wont like it but will feel better. There is a chance it is just dirt and you will know after you clean them. If you cant afford over the counter ear mite meds ask friends with cats or even friends of friends, most cat people have been through this and wil have some left over.I would try over the counter 2st but remeber it may take more then one treatment and you will still want to help every so often with the cotton balls gently

If the substance resembles coffee grinds, it's probably earmites constantly chewing inside the cat's head. This condition can be easily treated with a visit to a vet. Left untreated the cat will eventually scratch so hard at it's ears they will start to bleed and become infected.

Yes, earmites or other type of infection. There's a solution that can be put in the ears to eradicate the problem.

Sounds like ear mites. There is a solution that you can get from your vet clinic to help clean that out. In the mean time, you can try a water and vinegar solution. I use that when I don't have the solution from the vet's clinic and it works just fine.

That would be ear mites. Go to your vet and get some medical treatment. Depending on the hospital's prescription policy, you may be able to buy some medication over the counter and skip the office fee etc.

Not necessarily. You could get some Revolution from the vet (do not use over-the-counter meds as they can be deadly) which you put behind the neck (read directions) and it treats for fleas & earmites, etc...just in case. And here is some info for you to read as well:
