I agree with you totally. It is useless to 99% of the people who are forced to take it in school. I have never heard a person say they needed it in after school. I am 62 and I don't need to know algebra to figure out if the ice-cream man cheated me.

Well actually Alegebra and Math before you get into calculus are really only there to teach you logical procedures and problem solving. Regardless of the letters you use, it teaches you step by step thinking which can help in later life....even as a writer. Colleges will look at your math grades even though you may want to major in English, just as they look at your other grades in other classes as well. My advice is to bone up on some of your math, and if you are in need of help which i'm not implying, ask for help from the teacher or try to get a tutor.

Your going to need to find unknowns. We don't use letters anymore really. We use Greek symbols like beta, omega, etc. This comes in very handy especially in the real world. What if you wanted to maximize the size of your house on your property. You would use the area equation of lxw=area to find the unknown. You might want to find the distance of a river to build a bridge and use unknowns as the length you don't know to solve with distance you do know. We also use it to find depths of rivers, creeks, or ponds. Math is a super important subject which tells people how good you are at analyzing and problem solving. It shows how well you can brainstorm and figure out problems that comes in handy in the workplace.

The letters represent unknown values...the values we try to find in an algebraic expression.
My students ask the same question you pose, and here is my standard answer. You may never use algebra in everyday life, but you WILL use the problem-solving process required in algebra. The process is much more important than the correct answer.
Learning how to solve a problem - in ANY walk of life - by using a step-by-step process will make you a much better, more decisive person.

The letters in Algebra stand for the parts of the equation that are unknown. Algebra is about the only math I still use in my everyday life and knowing how to solve for the unknown is very important. In "real life" you use math to handle your money, to calculate measures in cooking, to calculate measurement for building things or for making things out of fabric, in doing your taxes, in balancing your checkbook, and in making sure that you are being payed correctly and that the appropriate amounts are being taken out of your check.
Colleges want to see well-rounded, hard-working students. They want to see good grades in all courses, not just English. You will not be applying to the English department only, but also to the college or university, and they will be sorting through student applications and eliminating students before you even get the chance to be considered by the English department.
Colleges and universities are also looking for students who are responsible at work, involved in their communities, and carry through on their commitments. Make it a habit to work hard at ALL you do. This will help you to rise above the rest.

Pre-algebra is for persons who're no longer inherently stable at math. in case you're very stable at math, then you definately could proceed directly to Algebra; in any different case, initiate with pre-Algebra. In the two case, the issue matter is strictly the comparable; in pre-Algebra they simply take longer to bypass over the comparable cloth. in many college districts and private colleges, there is not any pre-Algebra determination, so which you'll be high-quality. And in case you chosen to bypass at present to Algebra you've got time to progression extra into math than others. stable success.

Well . . . I never used algebra once I got out of school, so I'm with you, but it is used in many different fields. In fact, I work at a health insurance company, and they use algebra to decide how much the products should cost.
As an English major and an English instructor, it's wise to have good grades in everything if you can. But they will look closer at your English courses if you decide to become an English major.

You use algebra to shop. If there is a 30% off sale on the item you want to purchase, you use algebra to determine what the sale price is on your own. For example, if a blouse has a regular price of $45 and the sale gives 25% off. How much is taken off the blouse?
As an algebra question, this would be asked:
What is 25% of $45? Answer .25*$45=$11.25

Unfortunately for you, colleges do look at your math grades and expect you to at least master basic Algebra. The purpose of algebra is to express unknown quantities in a formula form that allows one to solve for those unknowns. It is really just like another language or form of writing.

i aggree with you it makes it seem hard!
which is eaiser???
14+Kx5=567
or
14+__x5=567
the second looks eaiser but if u do it its really not!
ill do that problem/....
14 + K x 5 = 567
K x 5 + 14 = 567 <- ree write
Kx5+14-14=567-14
Kx5=553
____ ___ <- fractionbar
5 5

you have yo get the side without the answer to equil 0!
