My daughter is 10 years old, but needs to be reminded frequently to close her mouth when she is eating at the dinner table. Any suggestions?

aak my 12 year old son still has this problem. I have to constantly remind him. I have even tried turning his chair around away from the family so he couldn't participate in the family discussion. You can try. that is worked for a while. I think it just pure rebellion.

Turn it into a huge project. Have her write 2 skits- one that shows bad table manners, and the other that shows good table manners. Let her friends or siblings get in on the act and perform them for you. Tell her that if she learns about good table manners and can demonstrate them at home for a week after the skits, then you'll take her out to her favorite restaurant. It would even be really sweet if she went on a dinner date with Dad and dressed up to go out to eat. Might as well make it fun, right?

Be consistent! Every time you see her do it, address it with a simple "it isnt good manners to chew with your mouth open." But also reward with "thank you for using such good table manners" when it is appropriate. If table manners really REALLY are bad, they are excused from the table to go sit in another room until the rest of the family is finished eating. It is what I use with my own children.

When she does do it, do you encourage her? Do you reward her letting her know how good she did at dinner? Or, do you constantly berate her when she's not being good at the table? My son is only 4 1/2 and I have to remind him to close his mouth, when he does, I get so happy with him that when he takes another bite he makes sure he gets my attention so I can see he has chewed with his mouth closed.

I told my kids lips together teeth apart. Tell her it is important to have good table manners because she will not be liked in school that the other kids will not want to eat at her table. That is the Truth! My Son and then my Grandson many years later got into a lot of trouble for hitting different kids of course for smacking. I didn't approve of how both my son and my grand son behaved and they were punished for it but I told them id they could move to another table and tell the rude lip smacking kid why. And if their seats were assigned to ask the teacher to reassign them to another table. If your Daughter finds out kids won't want to eat with her she'll stop. All kids want to be liked.

since you stuck an unnecissary coment about Liberals/Democrats in your answer to another question, I thought i would stick this in here.... Liberals are not weak & when the rest come to there sences we may accually be able to get people to vote for jobs, better ecomony, and not voting for a killer just cause he says he will not raise taxes...by the way he lied about that too.... & your 10 year old takes after you I'm sure.. talking when your not supposed to & not making sence half the time

Show her how gross it looks to eat with her mouth open. Ask if if she wants her friends to see her look like that when shes eating at school.

Just keep after her and it will eventually sink in, its easier to just let her go but than you are not doing a good job of parenting

Their are also some great children's read aloud books that cover table manners and they make it fun. Check your local library and librarian. Walmart had one that was like "Please and THank You" but it was hilarious.
