I find this so annoying when guys do this! All of a sudden my college prof. starts calling us honey and sweetie. It's sorta of annoying. I know it's immautre but I've always wondered why guys do that. Alot of the girls at my school hang around him, cause I guess they find him attractive. But he only calls certain female students that, and when other teachers are around and he calls me "honey" he doesn't say it as free as he ussally says it. Can someone explain to me why he's all of a sudden doing this. I'm just like really stupid when it comes to guys!

it probably does mean something

but its probably different for each guy... some do it because they think its friendly... some do it because they want something... some people are a little more free with phrases like that, some southerners might say it and maybe it doesnt mean more than a friendly phrase

It is bad when either a girl or a guy says sweetie, dear, or honey to you. It has negative connotations.
Don't FALL for it. It is derogatory, no matter what you think.

When a guy says it, it is playing macho over you and wants to get into your pants. Has no respect.
When a girl says it, it means she thinks you are not at her level and that you have to be like a good little slave girl and listen to her. And she is really putting you down in a sly way. SLY PEOPLE USE THE WORD DEAR IN EVERYDAY CONVERSATION.

In the professional realm, I find that silly and condescending. In all of my classes, I have never heard of that going on, but I live up north. Maybe it's a regional thing. Regardless, I think it's unprofessional conduct and a lame quirk to boot.Professors are "intelligent" enough to know what's right and wrong as far as conduct. He's being manipulative.

He's being very sexist.
#1- Proffesors are held to a code of ethics-he's violating that code-this is obvious.
#2-The first "red flag" is that he refrains when his peers are within ear shot
#3-You have to ask yourself why the other female students hang out with him..something is definately going on,that would probably get him fired.
#4-You need to speak up if it makes you uncomfortable,or mention it too your academic adviser and ask how to approach the proffessor..
Sounds like a real creep.....

Perhaps he's just a jerk....or maybe he doesn't realize it's offensive to you. Try calling him honey or sweetie!

When straight guys do it it's because they are being condescending.

When gay guys do it it's usually a sign they feel some sort of friendship with you.

It means he cannot remember names. I wouldn't read anything into it and I would not visit his office alone if I were you either.
