i just bougt a new oven and changed it over to propane, but when i lit the pilots and tuned it on for a bit my co detector went off. is this just from it being new and it needs to run for a bit to get broke in or is something wrong?

This is a problem! Turn off the valve from the propane tank and get the oven serviced or replaced. You should have the dealer or the manufacturer check the oven for internal defects or leaks. Don't mess arund with this. Make the call ASAP.

Most natural gas ovens emit so little CO that that should not concern you; I also think you need to clean the oven, or have the landlord install a new Smoke Alarm (with a "hush" button). [A lot of self-cleaning ovens will set off the smoke alarms when they go through their cleaning cycle.] Most manufacturers of smoke alarms specify how far away from heating and cooking appliances their products should be installed; also at what distance below the ceiling, and how far from the wall/ceiling intersection. A lot of times, when the building is being "roughed-in", the electricians have no idea (although they should) what smoke alarms are being installed; so they go by whatever "rule of thumb" they have been taught. If you have the unit replaced, be certain it is installed per the instructions.

Yes it would because the components of the oven are coated with a factory oil that will burn off and cause the problem. If it persists though, then perhaps your propane conversion is not correct.

Likely something is wrong - but buy another detector to be sure. I assume you changed out some parts on you oven and those will have changed the air to fuel ratio in order to assure a complete burn - it appears that you are not getting a complete burn.

since it's propane (which is a gas) it will obviously release carbon monoxide.

It's new and it releases fumes when you heat it.
