Well, it depends on your location, are there alot of shops with prom dresses around? What size you were? But more than likely if you are in a normal populated area and normal size wise, I would at least go out and look around to make sure they are going to have a selection you want, Also if you have a idea what dress you want you can get shoes, purse, jewelry, etc.etc. on sale sometimes if you start early enough, if not get on the Internet. I think they prepare themselves all their young life for this crap festival called the prom. Personally I think it is a total waste of time. Lets dress up like a bunch d*ckhe*ds and go to the school gymnasium then listen to sucky music for 3 hours.

no, just start looking for a dress soon and then get appointments for your hair and stuff, b/c hair salons tend to fill up fast during prom nights...
