If he is a great guy, go out with someone else first. Remember most rebound relationships don't last, and if they do they usually turn out not to be the greatest thing in your life. If you like your EX- bf's friend there should not be any harm in it. Who knows? He could turn out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Regret what you do, not what you don't do.
