For example, if one was staying in the executive suite (which costs around $1400 a night) at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. This is entirely hypothetical. I'm just curious.

I would plan on tipping the bellman at least USD$5 per bag. For a room service meal, when signing the tab add somewhere bewteen 15 and 20 percent tip -- and tell the waiter that you've added the tip on the ticket. If there's a problem with the room -- something's missing, like washcloths -- in the past I haven't tipped (rewarded) the housekeeping department for failing to do their job! When I needed my shoes quickly cleaned / polished, or needed a garment quickly pressed or cleaned -- these services merited between a $10 - 15 tip because of the nature of the request. If you use the concierge at all...plan on a $10 tip each time, especially at the higher-rated hotels.

Hope this helps!

It is definitely up to the customer's consideration and how greeted guest is with the hotel service provided at the time... I work in front office of a 4* hotel and I have received up to a $200.00 tip from only one customer... now I go above and beyond without specting anything back. But even if you only get your luggage carriaged; you should tip at least 5 dollars, how can anyone pay over $1000.00 dollars for a room but tip a dollar or two... that's very getto. The Bellmen salary is very low just like waitress; they live on the tip...

I have stayed in these kind of places and $5.00 is very reasonable and $2.00 to $3.00 for valet parking these people sometimes get tipped by hundreds of people a day! Believe me they are making a good living. Don't think that is being cheap because sometimes I have seen the richest people tip a lot less, or not tip at all.

In a high priced hotel like that one would expect to tip a bellman about $20 - more if lots of bags have to be loaded/unloaded. More if extra services were provided - like hanging up coats, getting ice, etc.

Three dollars.. and that's just for just routine service ... for those who go above and beyond the call of service ... five dollars. And there,my friend, is how you get milked out of twenty dollars every time you walk through the door.
