You can't "make" a puppy eat if it doesn't want to... and we're concerned that you got a 6-week old pup. Most states have laws that require that pups be at least 8 weeks old before they can be sold or given away.

Offer the pup food about 3 times a day, at the same time each day so its body can get onto a "schedule", and it can learn to anticipate when food will be coming. Offer a puppy this small some soft puppy food mixed with kibble. It would also be a good idea to get some liquid puppy formula from the pet store to add to the food. Because it was removed from it's mom too early, it will need a lot of extra nutrition. Make sure it always has water available to it.

If your pup goes for more than a day or two without eating and seems lethargic ('sleepy' all the time), get it to a vet right away. It may be very sick.

Your puppy is too young and should not be away from his mother. The American Shih Tzu Club Code of Ethics specifically states that except for unusual circumstances, a shih tzu puppy should not be sold until 12 (TWELVE) weeks of age.

Here is a list of questions from their site to ask a breeder:

Your puppy's problems may not be just that he is too young to be away from his mom and doesn't want to eat. You bought him from someone that violated the national breed club's code of ethics. Who knows what other things they have done which are not in the best interests of the pup ---or the new owner.

Perhaps you should approach the breeder with a copy of the questions and guidelines and see what the breeder has to say. If the breeder does not give you answers you feel comfortable with, return the pup.

In some states selling/buying a pup that young is illegal. The breeder may have already broken a law.

Best wishes. I know this is a difficult situation.

Contact the idiot who sold you the dog and find out what, if anything, they were feeding it. At 6 weeks old, that puppy should still be with its mother and siblings. The person who sold it to you is unethical and a BYB. You need to get this puppy to the vet first thing on Monday!

If you can't reach the seller, go to the store and get puppy formula and soak the puppy food you have in it, until it is mush. The puppy should eat this. I am concerned that the puppy is depressed because it was separated too early. I hope your pup is OK, I would hate to see the puppy suffer because the "breeder" was a complete moron.

I don't blame you for getting the puppy too early, because you really wouldn't know. Reputable breeders know better. I breed Shih Tzu pups and usually don't let mine go until they 10 weeks old. If you have any more questions, or need more advice, feel free to e-mail me.

It grew to become into unlawful for the breeder to sell you a 6 wk previous domestic dog. you definitely need to document a police rfile and get in touch with Animal administration. i'm so sorry your domestic dog is ill, however the breeder of course did not look after the canines if she bought them (illegally) at such a youthful age. you additionally should document a small claims case (sue her) for the vet expenditures which you have incurred simply by domestic dog's ailment. The courtroom can order her to pay all the medical costs in case you deliver the documentation out of your vet to instruct that the domestic dog grew to become into ill once you got her. Your calls to the police and AC (plus a lawsuit) will optimistically stay away from different doggies sort suffering the comparable element as your domestic dog is now. as a good distance simply by fact the giardia.....i think of that if the vet theory it grew to become into deadly, the vet could've informed you. even nevertheless, it sounds like a undesirable case, and there is often the prospect that your domestic dog won't make it, yet considering which you got her to the vet so rapidly, i think of she has a solid probability of surviving. i'm hoping she gets extra sensible quickly.

Don't leave food out all day long. Offer it in the morning, give 20 minutes to eat. At the end of 20 minutes, pick the food up and don't offer food again until lunch time,.. same thing ..leave down for 20 minutes, then pick it up again. Do the same for dinner. Eventually, the dog will learn to eat when the food is offered. Puppies are finicky, too.. you have to find food that is appealing to the pup, and they'll come around.

If you are feeding it hard food, try softening it up with puppy milk. This can be purchased at a pet store. If you would rather try canned food that will work as well. Most puppies at that age are still nursing, so the smell of milk may entice it to eat.

six weeks means your shis tzu has just been taken from its mother and it is used to a milk diet...you should hand feed this puppy with the proper food. I can not believe you are not doing this already. my wife would roll the appropiate puppy food in a small ball and put it in the palm of her hand and let the dog get used to eating real fool. it will take a little time but the puppy will learn how to eat solid food on his or her own..remember this is just a baby...would you expect a human baby to know how to eat without being shown?

that puppy is kinda young to be away from it mom, maybe you could try feeding it canned food with a bit of milk in it.try putting a small amount on the end of your finger, put it in its mouth and let it get the taste of it. i've had kittens before, and we put their face in the food gently on if they're ready they will start to eat.

I'm confused, what do you mean "make" him eat?? A dog will not starve him or herself to death. When it's hungry, it will eat. If it continues to refuse food it's possible it could be ill and a trip to the vet is in order. At this age the pup could be suffering from Parvo, Coccidia or something simple like worms. If you just got the new pup, the stress of being in a new environment can lower his appetite. He will probably eat in a few days if this is the case, once he starts getting comfortable.
