My dog's a toy dog. I don't know exactly what breed she is, but she's long-haired. The father is a Miniature Pinscher. I'm worrying about her warmth and also comfort. They live in our garden, and I'm scared for both mother and pup because there might be snakes out there. Also, would it be okay if the father stayed with the pup and the mother? He doesn't seem to bother them or anything.

If the pup is less than 5 weeks old, the mom needs to be kept with it as much as possible, or she'll get "bored with her motherly duties and won't feed it properly.

Keep the dad AWAY from both mom and the baby until after the puppy is weaned (around 8 weeks old).

Puppies should also be kept indoors, away from the weather, other dogs, germs and bacteria until they are a least 8 weeks old and have had at least one puppy vaccination. they don't have a fully developed immune system; lots of things can make them very sick.

Get your dogs inside.

Deending on the breed some dogs won't leave except to do what they have to and eat. Others almost ignore or just feed then walk away. Others do it perfectly. If the pup is a boy you need to let the father with him as much as possible. A girl also should have at least a little time but dosen't need them like boys. the cold can be sloved with another dog with the pup or/and a wind-resisent spot with blankets and rugs. Try to feed the mom like some bacon fat and roast fat so she can nurse and not get to thin her self. It also is a good thing for the puppies.

No, it is not normal--- but you don't say how old the puppy is. When the puppies get teeth, the mom starts weaning them by leaving them alone longer and longer.
If the puppy is young, maybe the mom is just inexperienced and nervous about the whole thing. You should definitely intervene and make sure they are both kept warm and safe and getting adequate nutrition. Sometimes dog breeds that have been over-bred (like toys) seem to be less in touch with their 'instincts' and have a harder time caring for young.
Male dogs usually do not hang out with their puppies--- but if he is good with it, why not? Maybe he is instinctively trying to supply some of the nurturing the mom may not be giving.
Bring them in--- they need warmth and safety from predators.

are they your dogs? if not then call the animal shelter in you area to help you with them. if they are yours then they need to be brought inside now. if you live in a warm climate then it is alright. the male dog should not bother the puppies think about wolf packs.
