If you are taking you laptop take movies. Games, puzzles, books, playing cards. (don't take library books)
Make sure you have an eyemask if you want to sleep and something to help you sleep, not alcohol - that doesn't work.
Also take some snacks that you like - no matter what airline, the food pretty much stinks. Dried fruit, a bagel sandwich, peanut butter, carrots, stuff that is not too salty.
As for the genius that said joing the mile high club - yup that is what you want to do - go into the bacteria infested porta potty in the sky - and expose yourself to god knows what as well as stds.
Take your own travel pillow and a small blanket - unless the pillows and blankets provided come out of a plastic package - many other people have drooled on them, put their bare feet on them, changed their baby on them etc etc.
And DO NOT walk through the aircraft in you stocking feet or bare feet. People vomit on the floor - every day in every aircraft someone vomits and all they do it throw the powder on it and vacuum it up - yuk
In the bathroom - the water on the floor is not water - it is a co-ed bathroom.
Also - take sani-wipes and wipe down your seat's arm rest and do not eat anything off the tray table until you sanitize it as well
People think they get sick from the recirculated air, but that it the least of their worries. And wash your hands.
Drink lots of water - you dehydrate at altitude. Take some airborn or emer-gen-c with you as well as a vitamin B complex, it helps with the jet lag.
Have a good flight.

I find a huge novel, James Michener, War and Peace, Nora Roberts ' three novels in one and bring that along. Word searches, crossword puzzles, travel games like scrabble or boggle , trivia cards from Trivial pursuit , you might get a whole game going with people around you, you never know.
If it's a night flight, I get a blankie and a night mask and sleep my 8 hours if I can to regulate my body for the time of arrival.
Don't do anything weird, people are so paranoid nowadays in airports you'll get reported or thrown off the flight.

Read a book. Also consider not sleeping the night before you leave so you'll be tired and more prone to sleep during the flight. If there is any doubt you can, perhaps your physician can prescribe you some sleeping pills to assist in that regard.

copy some of your favorites onto CD and listen to them. Also crochet, bring a great book, take a nap and watch your favorite movies on your laptop or else a portable DVD player.
