I have a dog who gets in the bathtub whenever a storm is coming. If I don't see her for a while, I go check the tub -- then I know that a thunderstorm is on its way.
P.S. I have put some carpet squares in the tub to keep her comfortable -- I might be the only person in the state with a carpeted bathtub. :)

I used to call my dog "my little meteorologist". It would start to shake like a leaf a few hours before the storm was actually here.
Panting, drooling, you name it...
The one I have now is even worse.I work nights and had moved iinto a new place just a couple of weeks ago. My dog was kept in my large master suite with attached bathroom. He had a petgate towards the loving room.
Anyway it was starting to rumble badly around 4 am and all I could think of is my dog being scared. I couldn't really call anyone at this time of night, about 6 am I called my stepdad to go and check on him.
When I came home he told me he found my 65 lb Pit sitting in the sink, shaking like a leaf. He had also tried to chew threw the door and the frame, there was blood everywhere, and he broke a claw. There was so much wood on the floor, it looked like I was in a saw mill.
I found it strange that he didn't try to jump over the petgate, it was just a small one, or at least chew through it....I guess he just wasn't thinking straight.
So now they know to come get him if I am at work.
But yes a lot of dogs can tell and I believe it has to do with the barometric pressure

For sure. Yesterday when the 5 Florida tornadoes came north and south of me at 4:00am, I had two shaking, drooling dogs on my bed trying to get me up.
There are more stories about the dogs waking up their owners.
So they know. In a regular thunderstorm, I have to give the Rescue Remedy to calm them down before the storm even hits. Better than the weatherpersons.

Yes, I had a shih tzu who went nuts when a storm approached but he ran out in front of a car and got killed...so much for his psychic ability>>he feared loud noises like fire crackers
my new shih tzu dog is three years old and shows no notice of any storms or fear of firecrackers...but he is a good watch dog and barks when someone rings the bell...even if the doorbell is on the TV show
some dogs do and some dogs don't...just like people

I used to have a Bassett Hound who would follow so close behind me his nose would bump my leg. We live on the coast so when a tropical storm or hurricane was brewing he would whine louder & louder while following closer & closer. (By the time we would be battened down my dog would be baying in between the whines. It was the ONLY time he bayed at anything! my vet says dogs sense the change in barometric pressure.
We have three dogs now-one of them doesn't do anything when it's going to rain even, but the other two start whining and trying to hide in the bedroom. It's almost funny b/c sometimes the rain will blow over but the two dogs are acting silly.

Their senses are so much more acute than ours--- they sense changes in air pressure-- can hear things LONG before we can, including deep rumblings in the ground preceding an earthquake.
My dogs always tell me when a thunder storm is coming--- they can hear it miles and miles way and my black lab starts panting, drooling, and hiding. He's a huge sissy--- for no reason we can figure as we had him from 6 weeks and he was never hurt. Fourth of July is pure misery for him.

Yes, they can tell. Animals in the wild know also and will seek shelter when a storm approaches.
